Earlier in the week we posted about the rumored demise of Nike‘s FuelBand, which was seemingly confirmed by news of layoffs at the firm’s Digital Sport division. Now Nike has denied the rumors, stating in an email sent to Re/code that “the Nike+ FuelBand SE remains an important part of our business. We will continue to improve the Nike+ FuelBand App, launch new METALUXE colors, and we will sell and support the Nike+ FuelBand SE for the foreseeable future.” The major issue for Nike is the steady growth of competitors in the wearable tech space, and with that, increased difficulty in attracting the kind of top-tier tech talent needed to maintain and elevate projects such as the FuelBand. Currently, Nike still does not have an Android app for the FuelBand, and it’s worth noting that close compatriot Apple’s rumored entry into the wearable tech market could be a better way to gain traction in the realm of wearable technology. For the time being, all this remains speculation but it does seem like big changes will be coming soon. We’ll keep you posted on any new developments.
