With 90,000 entries from 132 countries, the 57th World Press Photo Contest concluded with winning imagery from nine themed categories such as Sports News, Nature, General News and Observed Portraits. The winner of the Contemporary Issues genre and World Press Photo of the Year 2014 came from American photographer John Stanmeyer. Shown above, his photo captured African migrants on the shore of Djibouti City at night — a transit point for migrants from Somalia, Ethiopia, and Eritrea seeking a better life in Europe and the Middle East – raising their phones to try and capture an inexpensive signal from neighboring Somalia to reach relatives abroad. The photo was shot for National Geographic which Stanmeyer regularly contributes too. For more information on the photo and competition head to World Press Photo.
