Tsuyoshi Hayashi Recycled Roof Tile Stools and Benches

Eindhoven-based designer Tsuyoshi Hayashi recently presented his idea for sustainable furniture for the [D3] Young Designers Contest at the IMM Cologne 2014 furniture show. Dubbed “Kawara Benches,” the seating system makes use of ceramic roof tiles commonly used for traditional Japanese homes, which are hard to recycle and therefore frequently discarded. Hayashi takes refurbished tiles and simply mounts them onto a sturdy wooden frame, creating an ergonomic seating surface using the tiles’ natural curve and unique texture.
