A few weeks ago, it was announced that the cause of Amy Winehouse‘s July 2011 death would be reexamined due to a lack of qualification by the coroner who carried out the initial inquest. Now, the results of the second go-around are in. It has been confirmed that the tragic death of the 27-year-old phenom was indeed caused by accidental alcohol poisoning as concluded in the original verdict. According to Dr. Shirley Radcliffe, the interim coroner who conducted the second inquest, Winehouse “had a history of excessive alcohol ingestion for some years and was under the care of a number of physicians…She had had a period of abstinence from alcohol for 12-13 days in July but a few days before her death she began to drink alcohol again.” There was no indicator that she had any illegal drugs in her system at the time. In addition, Independent is reporting that the night before her death, Winehouse told her general practitioner who was overseeing her health at the time that she “did not want to die.” This heartwrenching story only seems to get deeper and deeper. On a more happy note, though, during a radio interview tonight Nas stated that he was given Winehouse’s vocals for “Cherry Wine” by producer Salaam Remi and later discovered that she had actually written the lyrics about him. Although most of us will never get over her untimely passing, at least we have her music and the stories behind it to carry out her legacy.
