Lost amidst perpetual advances in smartphone, tablet and computer technology, the art of handwriting has quietly gone the way of the dodo. Still, there is a basic charm and physical connection to the process of setting pen to paper that cannot be wholly replaced by touchscreens and keyboards. Artist Leandro Senna recently stepped away from his computer for a personal project involving only pencils, black tint pens and brushes, hand-lettering the lyrics to Bob Dylan’s “Subterranean Homesick Blues.” Inspired by the video in which Dylan flipped handwritten lyric cards as the song played, Senna recreated the process using 66 cards completed in a month — no retouching or extraneous technology allowed. Watch the artist’s video above for a good dose of visual and aural nostalgia and be inspired, perhaps, to engage in your own typographical endeavors.
