"Guesthouse" in New York Designed by Ai Weiwei & HHF Architects

Distanced by a two-hour car ride from Manhattan in upstate New York, the Ai Weiwei + HHF Architects guesthouse appears at first glance to be an observation villa as it sits firmly atop a grassy slope. Intended to serve a simple purpose, the “Y”-shaped design was meant to house only a single bedroom, working space, and most importantly, an area for the owner’s artwork collection. The guesthouse seamlessly blends in with its surroundings as the majority of the building is constructed out of timber that is wrapped in corrugated COR-TEN steel. Over time, with the rusting of the steel, the color of the facade has changed to a dark hue to complement the woody environment – even much so during the fall seasons. Known for his efforts as one of China’s most outspoken and infamous artists, his architectural endeavors are a further exemplification of his creative talents.
