In a rather sad turn of events, M83’s hit “Midnight City” has been linked with French extreme right political party, Le Front National, who used the song to soundtrack images for their cause. The party chose the song to support Julien Rochedy, president of the Front National’s youth electoral support committee Jeunes avec Marine, and his views on immigration. Obviously, it did not take the band too long to react to this unflattering sign of appreciation. According to M83’s Facebook page, Anthony Gonzalez expressed his discontent about this development. It is worth pointing out that the post has been removed in the meantime.
To my horror, I discovered that the Front National have been using “Midnight City” in one of their campaign videos. They are doing this without my permission, and I am appalled at their lack of artistic respect. At the very least, artists should be asked if they agree, or disagree, with being associated with a certain image or brand. Even the most commerce-minded advertising agencies and brands do so. In general, the music of M83 is apolitical, and I refuse to be associated with any party, and particularly the Front National…
