Utterly surreal, the Fogo Island Studios by Saunders Architects appears like a thing of Hollywood

Utterly surreal, the Fogo Island Studios by Saunders Architects appears like a thing of Hollywood dreams or North Atlantic urban myths. An actuality, however, the four exclusive studios (soon to be six) sit on the north coast of Newfoundland, Canada–a sizable island in the North Atlantic Ocean just off the East Coast of North America. Forming part of the island’s efforts to revive tourism while preserving local heritage and tradition, the Fogo Island Arts Corporation embarked on creating amenities for its visitors including lodging, a library, an art gallery, cinema, spa facilities, and gourmet outlets. Todd Saunders, a Newfoundland-born architect, was recruited for the endeavor and his genuine ties to the island, familiarity and daring vision has resulted in these geometrically-shaped studios strategically located around the island to showcase its breathtaking views. In 2010, the Long Studio was completed which looks out onto the North Atlantic Ocean and Greenland icebergs. Three other studios followed in 2011–the Tower Studio in Shoal Bay, Bridge Studio in Deep Bay and Squish Studio near Titling. The Short Studio in Little Seldon and Fogo Studio in the village of Fogo are expected to join these four in the near future. All studios were named after their shape and form to emphasize their strongest points and thoroughly weather-resistant construction. This is truly stunning minimalist design with the finest of backdrops.
