This past weekend HYPEBEAST contributor John Ong was on hand for the opening of Joseph Nahmad Contemporary‘s Deep Space exhibition – an examination of “vernacular street art” from artists Matta, Rammellzee, Futura and Phase 2. With an extensive collection of artwork curated by Nemo Librizzi and Joseph Nahmad, NYArtBeat.com mentions “the exhibition aims to critically examine the public’s understanding of street art through a historical and multi-generational lens, connecting the visual language of these four renowned artists.” Going deeper, Deep Space draws attention to the enormous similarities in style, technique, and intention between the work of Chilean-born artist Matta’s politically charged murals of the 1970s and that of the three New York City subway taggers of the 1980s. Accompanied by a full-length publication including essays from Justin Spring and Nemo Librizzi, this impressively curated showing will be open until December 12 in lower Manhattan’s Meatpacking District.
