As World Cup 2010 sets to become the marquee sporting event of 2010, Y-3 presents a portion of their collection in honor of various adidas-sponsored football teams as part of its 2010 spring collection. Countries such as Japan, South Africa (2010 World Cup hosts), Germany and Argentina are represented alongside some of Yohji Yamamoto’s popular avant-garde aesthetics. While there’s no denying that Y-3 is a sportswear brand, there are some more fashion-driven pieces together with traditional windbreakers, track tops and bottoms. The show was finished off with the appearance of French legend Zinedine Zidane.

With a show structured around national anthems and emblems, and a soundtrack that had the underlying buzz of a stadium crowd, Yohji Yamamoto embraced the universal spirit of sport with his new collection for Adidas. Appropriately, the standout men’s items were the sportiest: the shoes, the nylon parkas, the tank tops. As usual, there were pieces that served as a reminder of Yohji’s unimpeachable position in the world of the fashion avant-garde—oversize plaid shirts that extended into points at the front, or black culottes—but the net tubes that wrapped the models at one point just looked silly. There was some method to the madness, however. A net dropped from the ceiling at the finale, and Zidane—yes, that Zidane—joined Yohji for a kickabout. Maybe it was only testament to a promotional deal with Adidas that the soccer legend had to honor, but still, it was a punchy finale that sent the crowd away happy.
