As Beijing just celebrated the official one year countdown to the 2008 Olympics, a battle is brewing on the horizon between China’s three largest athletic brands, adidas, Nike and Li-Ning. Two of the three should immediately illicit a response, however the 3rd brand Li-Ning is no push-over and recently signed Shaquille O’Neal on board. A short interview was conducted by Darren Rovell with each of the brands to understand their respective approach to the 2008 Olympics. It is interesting to see Nike battling it out with adidas, with Nike sponsoring the athletic equipment of 22 teams. However the winning athletes will take to the podium in adidas gear. Li-Ning has taken a strategic approach and chosen to sponsor the gymnastics, table-tennis and diving teams. The reasoning behind this decision is that an expected 40-50% of all of China’s medals are expected to come from these events. An interesting read that also encompasses the forthcoming outlook regarding the sportswear scene in China. Check out the article here.
