adidas has taken a step forward for the 2008 African Cup of Nations and created a special official match ball. Named the "wawa aba", the ball utilizes colors derived from the Ghanaian national flag, the hosts of the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations. The use of the name, "wawa aba" includes various powerful references. For the Western African Akan culture, the name "wawa aba" is a symbol of persistence and the belief in strength and team spirit of the community. As well the wawa aba seed of the wawa tree is among the strongest and most usable woods in Africa. With the significant rise in football success for the African continent within the last few years, it was important for adidas to link this prestigious tournament and its own branded ball.
