Ai Weiwei

Artist/Activist
Nationality: Chinese / Age: 56 / Discipline: Contemporary Art
Chinese contemporary artist Ai Weiwei is the largest mouthpiece against the censorship that has often been a contentious issue in China. As a creative in China, a country that is not always conducive to freedom of expression, Weiwei has made it his objective to break down these barriers with his revolutionary efforts in communicating ideas of independent action and thinking. Often associated with championing various political causes, Weiwei translated his advocacy into various visual exhibitions, throughout 2013, with two major showings in Venice titled “Straight” and “S.A.C.R.E.D.,” on top of another event in Toronto named “According to What?”.
