GERING & LóPEZ GALLERY will be home to “King of the Wild Frontier,” a solo exhibition of new work by New York-based artist Todd James. In this exhibition, James presents two large new bodies of work. The first is a group of canvases depicting his familiar Somali pirate series. No longer on roughly cut sheets of paper, these oil paintings dominate the gallery with their crisp shapes, large-scale and emotive brushwork. The new medium accentuates characteristics of James’ work, namely the seductive colors and fluid lines of its subjects. The second part of the exhibition is a recreation of Vandal’s Bedroom – the sprawling, graffiti-filled structure that was a highlight of the “Art in the Streets” exhibition recently shown at the MOCA. The New York version of the work is equally dense with information. Part object, part installation, this teenage vandal’s bedroom-turned-graffiti battle station gives glimpses of plans for an imaginary artistic takeover. Bleeding marker drawings form letter styles from the rough & tumble 1980s New York subway era, they’ve been combined with repurposed cartoon characters performing decidedly off-model activity. “King of the Wild Frontier” runs from March 1-April 21.

Todd James and Studio Toykyo present their “CONTRACTOR” series of porcelain and bronze sculptures. The porcelain offering boasts a shiny, black glaze which is based on James painting in 2008 and will come in a numbered, screen printed cardboard box in a edition of 25 pieces. The bronze sculpture will come in a wood box with a numbered and signed screen print as proof of authenticity with only eight pieces created. New York City artist Steve Powers began his creative journey years ago in the illustrious Overbrook neighborhood in Philadelphia and has since expanded his reach to the landscape of New York and beyond. On November 19 at Livingston Street Market in Brooklyn, Powers alongside fellow artist Todd James will be sharing their work from LA MOCA’s Art, for a one-day affair. Todd James is among the solo artists to contribute a T-shirt to OriginalFake’s 5th Anniversary collection. The American illustrator’s contribution involves his signature characters dancing atop the KAWS Companion. The T-shirt is available through select channels including the OriginalFake online store.

New York artist Todd James hosts a new solo exhibition at the Gallery A.L.I.C.E. in Brussels, Belgium. Intriguingly titled “Infinity Lessons”, the New York artist will exhibit a new lineup of paintings and ceramic sculptures. Attendees can expect to divulge in the works beginning December 12, 2010 and will continue running until December 12, 2011.

Todd James aka REAS and Lydia Fong aka Barry McGee came together in a joint show that recently opened in Copenhagen at V1 Gallery. The show featured the trademark visual styles of each respective artist as well as a collaborative piece to cap off the show.

Gering & Lopez Gallery welcome the works of Todd James aka REAS as it opens its doors to the first exhibition of the new year. Dubbed Make My Burden Lighter, the show highlights new works from James, with an opening taking place on January 15th (6-8pm), running through February 20th, 2009. In Make My Burden Lighter, James depicts the sinful truths of American life with winsome cartoonish charm. Anthropomorphized weapons cajole in blood baths with pink-skinned blonde bombshells. Sprawling battle scenes extend ad infinitum across multiple sheets of paper. Complex, all-consuming compositions have an overwhelming sense of momentum, as if they were inevitable and unstoppable. These celebratory scenes of massive global chaos are sharply ironic yet playfully whimsical, obscuring our collective moral sense of the sanctity of life and death while pushing the boundaries of the viewer’s ability to judge what is desirable or taboo.

These seemingly innocent stream-of-consciousness doodles may appear as overtly political protest pieces upon closer examination. However, James does not seek to be didactic with his work. He is more interested in visually exploring the rhetorical techniques utilized by the American government and media in their attempts at desensitizing the populace’s perception of current affairs. The American tradition of packaging, commodifying, and manipulating information is at play in these works. They thus deeply connect with the current state of our shared reality, critiquing how we as spectators are led to understand it.
