Last December, photographer Peter Sutherland and VICE took a trip down to Lake O’Higgins to visit Faustino Barrientos – possibly its most famous living inhabitant. The 81-year-old gaucho has lived alone on the shores of the Chilean lake since 1965, in a house constructed off the remains of a shipwrecked fishing vessel. He lives off the land, some livestock and very little modern amenity in self-imposed seclusion. The nearest village sits 25 miles away, entailing a two-day horseback journey over rugged mountain paths that Faustino reluctantly makes for commerce once every couple of years. This Far Out video explores the true story of this inspiring lone ranger in one of the loveliest places on Earth.

Accomplished New York-based photographer Peter Sutherland is the midst of revisiting his previous book Autografs, with “More Autografs” alongside SNEEZE. Set to be featured in SNEEZE‘s issue 14, signed prints are at the forefront of the release as CINIK is the first writer to be featured. From the start, Peter Sutherland has been the go-to photographer for Palladium and its ongoing exploration series. Despite being a boot brand, Palladium’s dedication to urban exploration has brought them across the world in search of adventure and some captivating visual landscapes which remain largely unknown. Sutherland recently embarked on a journey alongside Pharrell Williams as they traveled to Tokyo. We asked the photographer several short questions as well as had him run down his favorite campaign images from the past.

How did this opportunity present itself with Palladium?
It started organically by working with Vice mag for many years earlier. I’ve been lucky enough to shoot all the Palladium campaigns.

What was your first experience in Tokyo like?
I went there in 2001, I was filming KAWS while he was installing a show there. It was cool, it seems like it was becoming a place for international artists and musicians. I remember visiting again in 2004 and seeing Pharrell on a huge BAPE TV screen in Harajuku.

How has your perception of Tokyo changed since your first trip?
I’ve probably been there seven times so it’s become a comfortable place. I have my spots, I have friends there etc. Maybe it has a more somber vibe now after the tsunami.

Despite a growing number of amateur photographers, what separates professionals from amateurs?
I don’t know, that is becoming a very blurry line, I think anyone can take good photos if their heart is in it. I guess the only difference at this point is that the pros get paid.

How (un)important is technological development to photography?
I don’t care so much about new gear, but I also don’t resist using it. The camera is just a means to an end for me. I have never wanted to control everything and I think that is what new technology gives you, is more control and options. I think it’s all good if you want to go tech or stay analog, it’s up to the person. I personally shot the campaign on a Canon 5D Mark II.

What is the most rewarding thing to come off this all?
It made a lot of people think about our dependency on (nuclear) power and I think the film and photos are an exciting way for people to get a sense of what it’s like in Tokyo.

How do you think Japan will bounce back from all these developments?
On a cultural level I think they will look to themselves more instead of curating so many things in from other places. I think it brought them closer together. The disaster is a complicated thing and it will probably force them to make changes, hopefully the rest of the world will do the same.

What was it like working with Pharrell?
It was fun, I think he is a great artist and his creativity comes through in his personality. He is not fond of heights I learned. When I am shooting, I always work with my brother Andrew. The three of us got along pretty well and
it felt like we were on an adventure that started underground at g-scan and ended high above Tokyo on a skyscraper.

The Californian-based label links with New York City photographer Peter Sutherland to showcase the brand’s offerings for the men’s Fall 2011 season. With a desert backdrop, the showcase presents itself as a combination of styles, each uniquely working together in the form of classic menswear, Americana and outdoor-inspired aesthetics.

The VICE 2010 Los Angeles Photo Show opened up this past weekend. Having provided a platform for many photographers in their formative years in the past, VICE has been helpful in launching the careers of select photographers. The 2010 exhibition included 20 different photographers including Lele Saveri, Seth Fluker, Jerry Hsu, Jared Ritz, Valerie Phillips, Gavin Watson, Peter Sutherland, Nicholas Haggard and many more. The whole exhibition was curated by Jonnie Craig and will run until September 2nd, 2010 at the Scion Gallery.

Having been one of the marquee collaborations thus far for the Stussy XXX 30th anniversary collection, Ricoh and Stussy went a step further to combine product and art as a group of notable creatives were each given a camera to document their lives. This was shown through a series of photographic sets involving Angela Boatwright, Kenneth Capello, Reggie Casagrande, Josh Chews, Atiba Jefferson, Tyrone Lebon, Ari Marcopoulos, Puente Yuan, Peter Sutherland and Rip Zinger. Starting Wednesday, April 14th, the photographs will be put on display at the San-Ai Dream Center in Tokyo until April 25th. Each photograph will be sold and limited to a run of 50 prints.

The Ricoh GR camera has a long history within Stussy’s roots. From the late 90’s onto today, the GR’s stealth design, easy-carry pocket size and ability to capture all the grit of the streets has made the GR an icon within our culture. In celebration of the Stussy x GRIII Digital camera collaboration, Stussy wanted to share the GRIII’s capabilities by way of creation, so they gave 10 photographer friends the GRIII to shoot what they see and feel. New York City-based photographer Peter Sutherland and his iconic photographic style will invade Los Angeles’ Hope Gallery later this month as his strong sense of realism offers a refreshing look into life via his personal framing behind the camera. Some of his strongest works in the past include his 2004 book on graffiti titled Autograf, his New York Messenger themed book, Pedal and Game, a look into the life of his soccer-orientated Chinatown Soccer Club. The exhibition “Hot Coals Only” begins on May 10th and runs until June 10th at the Hope Gallery in Los Angeles.

Taking place at the ATM Gallery in New York tomorrow the 21st, Chinatown Soccer Club defender Peter Sutherland will present an exhibition featuring photographs, sculptures and videos.
