Mike Giant is a name that has become synonymous for both his tattoo style and street art. Together with renowned muralist The Apexer (also known as Ricardo Richey) and armed with a healthy supply of MTN Colors, see what happens when these two creative forces align for a live collaboration on a street corner in San Francisco.

Photographer and filmmaker Sean Desmond takes us through an interview with a legend of San Francisco street art, Mike Giant. This stop-motion video covers the artist’s roots, including his humble beginnings, how his career as a writer unfolded, and the inspiration that has shaped his 22-year career. Enjoy!

In this new video, Mike Giant of REBEL8 speaks of his hand-illustrated map of the Mission District in San Francisco for The Mission Map Project. Amongst others things, Mike explains the reasoning behind the project and why it fits in with the makeup of San Francisco as a city. Enjoy!

Approximately a month ago, Mike Giant exhibited several new bodies of work at the Guerrero Gallery in San Francisco. In this video he recaps some of the work he’s showcased and created, which include some of his signature drawings alongside some lesser seen collage work. The collage work offers a look into Giant’s past as the visuals are complimented by his own notes and commentary. The show also included work from Adam 5100 and Even Keel.

San Francisco-based artist Mike Giant and his love of bikes manifests itself in a new collaborative bike with Cannondale. The Graffiti Bike features Mike Giant’s signature aesthetic with his illustrative style in black on white. Cannondale, in their continued support of the Bahati Foundation, has collaborated with renowned graffiti and tattoo artist Mike Giant to produce the limited edition Cannondale X Mike Giant Graffiti Bike, available now for bidding via eBay. The Bahati Foundation was founded in 2009 by the 2008 National Pro Criterium Champion and eight-time national champion, Rahasan Bahati and is dedicated to empowering inner-city youth through cycling, education, and music.

The Cannondale X Mike Giant Graffiti Bike features urban-inspired aesthetics provided by Mike Giant, and is a Cannondale SuperSix HI MOD frame/fork, 54cm, with Shimano Di2 drive train, custom Shimano Dura Ace wheels, PRO Vibe carbon bars, stem & set post, Fizik Aliante saddle, and Continental Grand Prix 4000 tires, just like the Bahati Team issue bikes. The bike will be awarded to its new owner on the final day of the AMGEN Tour of California, May 23, 2010. The AMGEN Tour of California is the largest cycling event in America, and is a Tour de France-style cycling road race, presented by AEG, that challenges the world’s top professional cycling teams to compete along a demanding course from May 16-23.

100% of proceeds from the auction of the Cannondale X Mike Giant Graffiti Bike will go to The Bahati Foundation’s GIVEBACK programs which works to inspire youth through the sport of cycling.

Last summer, The Tenderloin Project represented an inquisitive look by Sean Desmond into San Francisco’s poor and marginalized Tenderloin district. The project also featured a collaboration with Black Scale. Part 2 to the original collaboration will take place later next month with five new t-shirts set to release. A print show will take place on April 9th, 2010 at the Medicine Agency as it focuses on a number of collaborative prints which include the likes of Mike Giant and Mark Bode among other creatives. Instrumental in the growth of San Francisco’s skate and art communities repectively, retailer/brand FTC and Mike Giant’s REBEL8 come together on a skate deck, part of FTC’s 2010 Spring/Summer releases.
