If you haven’t seen the series, Here Comes the Neighborhood is a short-form docuseries exploring the power of public art and innovation to uplift and revitalize urban communities around the Arts District of Wynwood, Miami. Featuring an array of internationally acclaimed and locally respected street artists, graffiti writers and muralists, this is a form of entertainment that is not to be missed. Volume 7 finds legendary photographer Martha Cooper documenting the artistic district. Since graffiti is a medium that can be so temporary, Cooper’s contribution to the culture has been invaluable.

For its fourth episode entitled “Intercambio,” Here Comes the Neighborhood turns its lens to the intercultural aspects and underpinnings of its ongoing Wynwood Walls street art project in Miami, Florida. The community-centric project extended a broad-reaching invite to a slew of international artist from around the world, welcoming them to lend their artistic vision and creativity to the outdoor exhibition. Focusing on the work of artists from Mexico, Greece and Ukraine, the episode gives us a glimpse into artists such as Saner & Sego, b. and Interesni Kazki. Many of the artists both past and present that have emerged upon the Wynwood Walls since its creation have been crucial in spreading the multicultural tenants and boundary-transcendent elements of street art.

Art purveyors VNA caught up with respected photographer Martha Cooper during the opening of the much talked about “Art in the Streets” showcase at the MOCA in Los Angeles. Amongst other things, Martha speaks a bit about the history of graffiti and how much its grown from its beginnings to the present day. Enjoy!

Amongst all exhibitions and highlights taking place at the recently commenced MOCA “Art in the Streets,” pioneering hip-hop photographer Martha Cooper shares with us some work by Os Gemeos. Paying homage to New York’s past, the brothers created a subway car replica which was subsequently used as a platform for the likes of REAS, Lee Quinones and BLADE to make their signature mark.

Following up on their inclusion in MOMA’s “Art in the Streets” exhibition, Shepard Fairey, COPE and Martha Cooper have teamed up to release a limited edition print that goes on sale today, April 21. The 18″ x 24″ poster is a signed screen print of a photograph taken by Martha Cooper of a wall mural featuring the work of Fairey and COPE. With a limited edition run of only 450 copies, the $60 print goes on sale today (at a random, unspecified time) through the OBEY GIANT web store.

This past weekend, cultural documentarian Martha Cooper was the focus of a new group art show titled “Martha Cooper : Remix Exhibition.” Having amassed a huge catalog of images over the years, it was up to several of the street art community’s finest to reappropriate her work through their own personal perspective and lens. Some of the key names who had a part in the show included Mark Bode, Neck Face, Anthony Lister, Shepard Fairey, Futura, Grotesk, Logan Hicks, The London Police, Mare 139, Barry McGee, Neck Face, José Parlá, Quik, Kenny Scharf and Swoon.

In a time before the widespread proliferation of cameras, the documentation of subcultures were hard to come by. Luckily for hip-hop and graffiti, they had an unlikely champion in Martha Cooper who helped capture all aspects of hip-hop from music to dance and art. In an upcoming exhibition at the Carmichael Gallery, the “Martha Cooper : Remix” exhibition will have some of her signature photography reappropriated via select artists. The likes of Mark Bode, Neck Face, Anthony Lister, Shepard Fairey, Futura, Grotesk, Logan Hicks, The London Police, Mare 139, Barry McGee, Neck Face, José Parlá, Quik, Kenny Scharf and Swoon will all present bodies of work.

Last month, pioneering Hip-Hop documentarian Martha Cooper debuted her newest publication Name Tagging at the OBEY Pop-Up Shop. Covering the prevalent notion of tagging with stickers once used primarily in the corporate environment, we took the opportunity to visit with Martha Cooper regarding her book, her contributions to graffiti and Hip-Hop and the importance of her getting involved early on as a photographer and the difficulty current photographers face. Name Tagging is available now through Mark Batty Publisher with a retail price of $12.95.

On Saturday, May 15th, legendary Hip-Hop photography Martha Cooper will release her latest book titled “Name Tagging” through a launch party at the OBEY Pop-Up Store in New York. The book’s focus lies in the use of “Hello My Name Is” stickers as well as the pioneering days of graffiti. A number of notable personalities make their way into the book alongside Cooper’s photography. A general release will be available through Amazon on June 1st.
