One of the world’s most controversial artists, Damien Hirst recently launched a high-profile show at Los Angeles’ Gagosian Gallery. Effectively pushing the boundaries of pricing for a living artist, Hirst’s Los Angeles premiere was just one of a globally coordinated showing at all 11 Gagosians worldwide including New York, London, Paris, Los Angeles, Rome, Athens, Geneva and Hong Kong. The focus on Hirst’s spot paintings included upwards of 300 borrowed pieces from 150 collectors spanning 20 countries. To help cap off the event, The Complete Spot Paintings 1986–2011 was released which represents a fully illustrated catalog of all of Hirst’s spot paintings since 1986 with essays by “Museum of Modern Art curator Ann Temkin, cultural critic Michael Bracewell, and art historian Robert Pincus-Witten as well as a conversation between Damien Hirst, Ed Ruscha and John Baldessari.” The exhibition will remain open until February 10.

The ever popular and equally enigmatic artist Damien Hirst has kicked off The Complete Spot Challenge. Titled after his popular collection of Spot Paintings, Hirst challenges the cultured jetsetter to collect stamps on a Spot Challenge card from each of eleven Gagosian Galleries in major cities around the world: London, New York, Paris, Rome, Hong Kong, Athens, Geneva and Beverly Hills. The instantly recognizable works of pop artist Roy Lichtenstein are currently being hosted in Hong Kong at the Gagosian Gallery. The exhibition titled “Landscapes in the Chinese Style” acts as a posthumous tribute to some of Lichtenstein’s lesser known pieces. Characterized by reinterpretations of classic Chinese styles, the exhibition holds pieces deriving inspiration from traditional themes Zen and the beauty of nature.

Takashi Murakami is showing no signs of slowing down, unveiling a show at the Gagosian Gallery in London right after his foray into the digital world designing the Summer Solstice “doodle” for Google. Although the exhibition is not yet open to the public, a sneak peek of the show is available here. Returning to one of his more infamous subjects – human sexuality and its expression in Japanese animation and comic books – Murakami has made at least one new ultra well-endowed sculpture for the London show, entitled 3-Meter Girl. Furthermore, Gagosian promises a new selection of paintings and sculptures from the Japanese artist in his unique “Superflat” style merging Warhol-era pop art with traditional Japanese painting media, and everything in-between. Gagosian Gallery is currently hosting an exhibition in Hong Kong entitled “Richard Prince” which features a number of selected works from the artist and marks his first ever solo show in Asia. Having been tapped several years ago by luxury label Louis Vuitton to collaborate on a collection of handbags and accessories, Prince is well-known for his stylistic photography that explores the visual definitions of gender form in pop culture through repetition and reiteration. Mining images for his work from various channels including mass media, advertising and entertainment, Prince’s photographs are easily recognizable and also highly sought after. Gagosian Gallery’s “Richard Prince” exhibition is scheduled to be on display through July 16, 2011.

Iconic Japanese superflat artist Takashi Murakami presented three new works at Art Hong Kong 2011: Tiger Club, The Heian Period and The Kamakura Period. Displayed within the Gagosian Gallery booth, each was a larger scale piece created with acrylic and gold leaf. For those interested in seeing them in person, the showcase will be on display through May 29, 2011.

Damien Hirst’s controversial work will hit the shores of Hong Kong next month with the unveiling of his “Forgotten Promises” exhibition. Earning the title as the most lucrative living artist of our times, the exhibition will take place at the Gagosian Gallery located in Central, Hong Kong. The exhibition will run from January 18, 2011 to March 19, 2011.

The celebrated Gagosian Gallery empire has just expanded, opening a new space in Paris. The latest location was designed jointly by Paris-based architect Jean-Francois Bodin, and designer of the Rome and London galleries, Caruso St. John. The Gallery is predictably modern and colored mostly in white, which will allow work to be prominent in the deceptively spacious area. Yet to be filled entirely, the first exhibitions are already underway on both the second floor and outside area.

Celebrated pop-artist Roy Lichtenstein recently had a retrospective of his work displayed at New York’s Gagosian Gallery which began last week. The exhibition is the first of its kind to focus solely on the artist’s works ranging from paintings to sculptures and drawings created between 1972 and the early 80s. Lichtenstein’s signature aesthetic inspired by newspaper and advertisements has become an often replicated style and has firmly cemented the artist’s place as one of the Pop Art world’s great masters. In addition to the retrospective exhibition, an illustrated catalog will release including an essay from Princeton University’s Professor of American Art, John Wilmerding, a pictorial from Louise Lawler and an interview with collector and dealer Joe Helman. The Roy Lichtenstein: Still Lifes Exhibition will run until July 30th, 2010.
