The latest offering from IKSOS – BERLIN comes in the form of the Snoopy Armchair and Sofa designed for Danish manufacturer, Versus. Harking back to the days of post-WWII pieces, when furniture was marketed as “comfortable” more than it was “stylish,” the Snoopy’s sculptural language is simple and clear. Marked piping is used to accentuate its shape in a natural way giving it an easily recognizable design signature, and is constructed and produced following the finest traditions of craftsmanship for this type of furniture. The entire line consists of a pouf, chair, 2-seater, 2.5-seater and 3-seater.

During Maison & Objet in Paris, Japanese design studio nendo unveiled a number of exhibitions, none more interesting than “Object Dependencies,” which showed off their unique pairing of dysfunctional design and art. The “Object Dependencies” collection presented ‘weak furniture’ which cannot stand independently until they have been made structurally sound by the addition of another object, which not only provides stability, but can offer other effects such as changing the angle of light emitted from a lamp, or expanding a bookshelf. Always a design house pushing the boundaries, their latest offering is no different.

Shao Fan is a painter, sculptor and designer in Beijing famous for innovative “reconstructive” furniture. His work deconstructs boundaries between fine art and applied design, marrying classical Ming wood carving techniques with contemporary design and materials to achieve a harmony symbolic of Chinese cultural evolution. The chairs are also modeled after Chinese ideograms, and will likely reveal more social commentary when examined closely.

Portuguese-born and London-based designer Hugo Passos has brought together design sensibilities he’s acquired over his many years in the industry for his Piet Side Tables. Featuring an asymmetrical leg structure in solid walnut with contrasting colored tops in matte lacquer, they’re available in black, red, yellow and blue. Pick one up at Por Vocacao for €230 EUR (approximately $300 USD).

Veja’s retail project, the Centre Commercial, currently play host to an exhibition that showcases the works of six young designers. Called “Hors Série,” this event gathers around various furniture and lighting decors that complement well to the minimal interior of the store. Sharing common interests when it comes to fabrication methods, all exhibitors are collectors, cabinet makers and artisans as well. This event is slated to run until November 30, 2011.

Fetiche Design Studio’s Carolina Armellini and Paulo Biancchi were enlisted by Brazilian home design organization Schuster to come up with an interesting piece of furniture. The result is the “Exo Chair” which is said to be emulated from the casing of an insect. Featuring triangular details on the outer layer that’s opposite to the rugged leather seat, the chair stands firmly using wood dowels. Moreover, the design of the “Exo Chair” is formulated “to support and protect the human form, providing a cradling space for the sitter.”

Alexander Rehn’s furniture is known for its multifunctional design and various moveable pieces. The Cay Sofa by Alexander Rehn is the designer’s latest invention and is for those who want to go home and relax in front of the fireplace, the TV, or just enjoy a good book. The flexible home living piece switches according to your body movement. Although still a prototype, expect the Cay Sofa to be released worldwide soon.

Perhaps owing to their love for nature and the 480 bird species found in the region, Stockholm-based Note Design Studio have created the Boet Stools (which means “nest” in Swedish). Equipped with a metal bowl and soft cork to sit on, this revolutionary design by Johan & Nystrom hands together a sense of humor through shape, color and use of materials. With this unique stool exhibiting soon at the “COUPLICITE” exhibition during Maison et Object in Paris, the Boet Stool era looks set to take off away from its comfort zone and into the global market.

Although we’ve come to associate the name Margaret Howell with clothing, this new venture sees the brand enter the realm of furniture design. Featured above are several pieces from a collaboration effort with UK furniture company ercol as the brand takes inspiration from the 1950s for a set of chairs, tables and accompanying loveseat. The collection of course is now available through Margaret Howell Japan.
