Last year, filmmaker Kirk Dianda embarked on a comprehensive four-part documentary regarding the story of iconic skate brand element. Interviewing various riders and affiliated personalities along the way, this culminated in a 200 page photo book and DVD which was recently released through Element. Club Mumble share a rare look into Chad Muska’s apartment in New York City as we see an additional artistic side to his life.

Throughout 2009, Kirk Dianda filmed and edited MAKE IT COUNT, The Element Story. The documentary is a four-part series, that tells the story of the iconic brand and the people that helped shape what it is today.

Element recently released a 200-page photo book, which includes a DVD of the film too (available at elementskateboards.com). The book is jam-packed with imagery from Element’s 20 years of defining moments, including ads, unseen photos, graphics, and behind the scenes photos from the film.

Throughout the production process, I was lucky enough to travel with Kirk while he interviewed this collection of truly inspiring people.

To start things off, we flew to the east coast to shoot a handful of interviews, including Bam and his family in Westchester, PA, Donny Barley in Providence, RI, and Chad Muska in New York, NY. While there, Chad put us up in his apartment, where he acted as the best host New York had to offer… Here’s an insider’s look at one of the most energetic artists and skateboarders around, and in his natural surroundings; SoHo.

After a few months of teasers, Fitted Hawaii finally unveils its first ever sneaker project, created in conjunction with Element Skateboards. Designed from the ground up, the sneaker take on a unique design approach, molded entirely from the deep rooted history between Fitted and Element. Only 60 pairs of the kicks were created, available now through Fitted Hawaii.

The details of the shoe are as follows: Sublimated nylon canvas print which features vintage Hawaiian pin up girls from way back when, a relic of our past – here to stay in the future. The tongue features a perfect Fitted crest hit, bottom sees a white vulcanized sole and embossed leather heel with a subtle trilock pattern, plus we took extra care in the design of the box, which features a nice, black print of trilocks in different contrasted shades of black, with a yellow carrier that slides in and out for easy storage and a metal hole for proper ventilation. Each shoe comes with 3 different pairs of laces: yellow trilock laces, black laces and white laces, each bearing Fitted tips.

Highly respected in the world of skateboarding and BMX, Brooklyn Machine Works brings forth their expertise in bike-making with a fusion of skate meets BMX alongside long-time skateboarding brand Element. Collaborating further on this upcoming joint venture, both entities landed in Los Angeles for an exclusive session, showcasing a collection which boasts both a bike and apparel lineup. Marking this special occasion we caught up with Element’s Johnny Schillereff alongside Brooklyn Machine Works founder Joe Avedisian and famed musician/designer/co-owner Pharrell Williams for further insight into the project.

Kirk Dianda presents his latest video project entitled Make It Count: The Element Story. This new documentary style film, delves into the history of Element Skateboards (founded by Johnny Schillereff), its inception into the world of skateboarding and East Coast roots, after nearly two decades in the industry. The trailer gives a small sense of the diverse community of interviewed, topics covered, and nostalgia that was un-earthed during the process. Make It Count looks to release on August 1st, 2009.
