DOIN’ IT IN THE PARK: Pick -Up Basketball NYC, a film by Bobbito Garcia & Kevin Couliau, explores the definition, history, culture and social impact of New York’s summer basketball scene – one that is widely recognized as the worldwide “mecca” of the sport. With 700+ courts spread out amongst the city, and notable names from the past and current scene like Dr. J, God Shammgod, Kenny Anderson, Pee Wee Kirkland, Tim “Headache” Gittens and Corey “Homicide” Williams, it’s estimated that New York boasts 500,000+ streetballers. Garcia and Couliau traveled to over 180 courts in the five boroughs in the making of their debut documentary film. DOIN’ IT IN THE PARK: Pick-Up Basketball NYC is expected to be released this summer barring a debilitating ankle injury.

On October 9th, Vienna was the setting for Sneakerness 2010. Having previously seen some static recaps of the event, we bring to you a video highlighting a special project involving Sneakerness Vienna and Nike Sportswear. “More Than A Run” brought together 6 teams to each offer their own respective interpretation of Nike Running in a more lifestyle context. The end result was a book with special commentary from none other than Bobbito Garcia.

With an influx of digital solutions in the realm of DJing and music, the increasingly obsolete medium of vinyl is fully tributed in the upcoming “musicmentary” To Have & To Hold. With a previous generation of music fans still embracing vinyl, the documentary focuses on its meaning, its graphical element and interviews with various hardcore collectors including Bobbito Garcia, Chuck D, Questlove, Danny Krivit, Bruce ‘Bluenote’ Ludvall and others.

Without a doubt one of the largest cultural drivers of sneaker culture in its relatively young existence, Bobbito Garcia recently broke headlines with the release of a collection of Royal Flash high-tops with sneaker company PRO-KEDS. A walking almanac of New York street culture and basketball, PRO-KEDS’ Dante Ross took the time to chop it up with Bobbito over the significance of this project and basketball’s significance in New York.

To celebrate the 30th Anniversary of the Pro-Keds Royal Flash, and the first-reissue of the sneaker in 30 years, Pro-Keds linked up with Bobbito “Kool Bob Love” Garcia to put his own touches on one of his most beloved sneakers. In this video, MaZe of KixandtheCity sits down with Kool Bob Love to discuss the history and significance of the Pro-Keds brand and his upcoming Pro-Keds Bobbito Royal Flash Pack. After a long series of previews, Pro-Keds finally unveils its full collaboration with New York City legend and cultural icon Bobbito Garcia. Utilizing the Royal Flash model, Bobbito works up a simple design, paying tribute to his boriqua brethren while at the same time celebrating the sneaker’s 30th Anniversary. The set, consisting of four suede colorways, is set to release on October 28th at select New York retail accounts, with Kool Bob Love on hand doing in-store appearances.

New York DJ and ex-Puerto Rico basketball star Bobbito Garcia recently made an appearance promoting ethnic diversity on American news programme CNN. Garcia himself is known predominantly as a DJ who literally mixes Latino and African American cultures together through his music. One love.

An integral member of the whole sneaker and music scene, Bobbito Garcia sees himself pairing up with Pro-Keds in the upcoming release of the 1979-conceived Royal Flash. The buttery suede upper will come in four different colors as 2009 marks the 30th anniversary of the shoe. Look for the shoes to hit retailers in the near future.
