Last month Reebok previewed its Art Basel exhibit titled “Classics,” showcasing the work of legendary hip-hop photographer Jonathan Mannion. Part one highlighted Mannion’s early work, his big break with the late Heavy D, and the process he goes through to capture the essence of each artist in every still. Today, Reebok presents the second and final part of this video series, providing a look into the gallery itself and its opening night’s star-studded celebration. The four-day exhibit presented a look into the photographer’s most celebrated and recognizable work, featuring many of our favorite hip-hop figures both past and present. As you can see from the footage captured, Mannion is a favorite among his hip-hop colleagues, pulling in the likes of Fabolous, Rick Ross, Gabrielle Union and A$AP Rocky to celebrate his timeless work. As our beloved music genre transitions from an underground subculture to mainstream America, Mannion will surely continue to capture the expressive nature of our favorite rappers for years to come.

White Walls hosted four booths at SCOPE, situated in the center of Miami’s Wynwood Gallery Arts District, featuring a MTN Colors Group show with APEX, Neon, Estria, Vogue, Blek le Rat, HUSH, Kofie and Chor Boogie. As well as curating these spaces at SCOPE, White Walls also lead multiple projects throughout the city of Miami for months leading up to, and during the week of Art Basel 2011, bringing the work of our renowned participating artists to the streets of Miami. The above video is a testament to just how strong the Art Basel movement is.

Well-known New York graffiti artist West One was awarded with the opportunity to highlight his work on one of the Graffuturism walls for Art Basel Miami 2011. In somewhat stepping away from his traditional style, West One began with a white base, as he then highlighted the mural with a barrage of differing strokes shades. Upon implementing layer after layer, the wall was transformed from bland to an intriguing piece of abstract art.

On November 30th BLK DMN hosted a private event at fashion boutique The Webster Miami to commemorate the launch of its first unisex fragrance, Perfume 11, featuring scents of black pepper, cedar, amber and more. For the launch party, BLK DMN featured a one-of-a-kind audio and visual installation co-conceived by the digital collective behind POST. They used the Phantom camera to capture hypnotic visual journey at 2,000 fps based on the creation of a nebula in an alternate universe. This was mixed with artistic splashes of perfume accompanied by the pulsating sounds of musical visionaries, Twin Shadow. BLK DMN’s Perfume 11 can be purchased at its flagship store in SoHo as well as The Webster Miami for $110 USD.

Taking yet another look at Team MADE‘s exploration of this year’s Art Basel Miami, the piece above follows the crew around the Miami Beach convention center as well as the ever-bustling Wynwood arts district, located just miles north of downtown Miami. This year marked the 10th anniversary of the now much-appreciated arts festival, as the events showcased a plethora of artists, young and old, highlighting a variety of styles, backgrounds and presentations.

In creating one of the more intriguing murals for Art Basel Miami 2011, street artist Jersey Joe tagged nearly an entire block to present his unique concept. The inspiration behind his elaborate piece came from artists of the ’70s and ’80s who would paint along subway cars from front to back, to in turn equate to a movable transition of work. Joe implemented the use of vibrant faces to span across his elongated canvas, awarding those who drive by with a somewhat similar throw-up effect, leading to a story along the way.

In our continued coverage of Art Basel, we bring you a mural from LA-based artist RISK, whom recently made the trip to the Miami arts event. A friend of artists RETNA and RIME, the influential and multi-talented artist/writer utilized some of his unique skills to decorate a wall with his multicolored creation, which was a fan favorite at the event. It demonstrates an almost tie-dye color scheme, broken down into three colorful segments that are both eye-catching and have a level of dimensionality and texture that truly make this piece interesting.

Los Angeles-based artist Retna has made his presence known at Art Basil Miami 2011 with an awe-inspiring painting on the side of a building, very near Italiano Ron’s piece from 2009. Stepping away from a usually dark and dramatic color scheme, Retna has instead chosen to utilize brighter colors that seem to pop up on every corner of the community. With his signature calligraphy style of lettering utilized, this is certainly one of the standout moments from Art Basel this year.

New York-based photographer Jonathan Mannion, who is responsible for some of the most lasting and memorable photographs in hip-hop history, recently had a chance to sit down with MADE as he talked about his works at Art Basel Miami. Mannion’s love of the medium is evidenced in how he reminisces about his affinity for the creative process, from coming up with something conceptually, to shooting the photo, to finally receiving the contact sheet. Along with the photographs, the solo show boasted performances from A$AP Rocky and DJ Clark Kent.

Berlin’s MADE has been busy making its rounds of Art Basel Miami this year with another video centering around a visit to the OHWOW gallery to partake in the “It ain’t fair” exhibition. An appearance on camera from Jose Parla discusses his inspirations into his contribution to the show including Scott Campbell, Dan Colen, Aaron Young, José Parlá, Agathe Snow and Angel Otero among others.
