New York-based photographer and filmmaker Ari Marcopoulos is readying his latest collection for public consumption. Titled “Wherever You Go,” the Amsterdam native and former Warhol assistant’s solo exhibition is set to debut at New York City’s Marlborough Chelsea with a grand opening on May 10 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Since debuting their collaborative effort, Adam Kimmel and Carhartt have been applauded for their appreciation for American heritage and love of understated quality and underestimated luxury. In the latest editorial spread from Dazed Digital, photographer Ari Marcopoulos manages to get Kimmel in front of the lens to create a type of “method modeling” that is starting to catch on in the sartorial world. Utilizing a look that can best be described as “state trooper-chic,” Kimmel employs a weathered hat, muted color tones, and outdoor locales that blends the lines between natural beauty and progress. What are the biggest changes from the previous collections?
The fabrics are tougher and the fits are more refined. Since I started collaborating with Carhartt I’ve been working with different balances between tough and soft, baggy and skinny, elegant and brute. I’m always trying to deepen the right groove.

Are there any fits and garment types that are new to this collection?
I took a few ideas based on classic men’s looks that I’ve created over the years and tweaked them this season to feel a bit woodsy and also elegant. And the fit is a bit slimmer this season. It’s always my intention to honor the Carhartt rugged feeling.

What is it with Ari and his photography that brought you to together?
Ari is always surfing the zeitgeist. He has a great feel for art and pop culture. He finds projects and themes for his work that are mostly unknown, and he captures them, and sure enough, in time, they prove to be relevant and important. Take the Forrest Bess film he made twelve years ago. Only now are people going gaga over this artist. Ari beat everyone to the punch. Time reveals the significance of Ari’s work, and I love that.

There’s a slight formal touch to Carhartt’s normal casual Americana, would you agree?
Yes, the overwhelming majority of the lineup is weather workwear, which is casual wear, but I’ve been careful to slip in some blazers and button downs to create more formal options for people who love the Carhartt brand. I am selling these clothes at Barney’s and other fine shops. And the greatest challenge is keeping that rugged look while infusing the garments with technical fabrics and silhouettes that justify the higher price point. I may be biased, but I think I’ve achieved that in the collection.

Pioneer skateboarder and artist Mark Gonzales added some art to the interior design of Supreme London with a sculpture and various wall paintings. Director and photographer Ari Marcopoulos captured the process in no exact timeline, but in just enough fragments to show Mark’s progression. It looks to be an interesting take on the store, especially in light of the minimalist approach used in the New York space.

Nike’s Bowery Stadium will be home to an exhibition of work from Amsterdam-born photographer and filmmaker, Ari Marcopoulos. The artist who first began as an assistant to Andy Warhol is well-known for his photographic depictions of the youth of New York City.  The exhibition,”Dark Sun” is being co-hosted by Saturday’s NYC and will feature live performances by Hanni El Khatib.  Dark Sun will show on September 13, 2011, from 7-9 p.m.

On March 15, New York-based photographer Ari Marcopoulos debuted a solo exhibition of his work at White Columns Gallery. Entitled “Directory,” the exhibit bears the same name as the title of Marcopoulos’s latest book and features several hundred black and white Xerox prints taken by the photographer over the past four years. The “Directory” exhibit runs through April 16, 2011.

Photographer Ari Marcopoulos has amassed an enviable catalog of photos and relationships over his 30-year career. His upcoming book titled Directory is a testament to the photographer and filmmaker’s documentation exploits with 1,200 pages representing a good chunk of his favorite photos. Interview Magazine conducted a short interview with Marcopoulos including how he went about the book and some background information. Directory will be published by Rizzoli and Nieves with a release on March 5. Some of the questions and answers from the interview can be seen below.

KEN MILLER: How do you edit a 1200-page book?

ARI MARCOPOULOS: You don’t edit. We just took a stack [of photos] and then laid them on top of each other.

Your early work was black and white, then you switched to color. Why switch back to black and white?

I didn’t really switch back. I shoot both color and black and white still—predominantly color. The [images in the book] are all copies, so most of the originals are color photos.

How did you arrive at the photocopied printing style you’ve been using for the last few years?

I have been making photocopies for years, first just as a tool to figure out book layouts, but always loving the look. Then it was a question of being tired of endless tinkering to get a “perfect” color print. With photocopies, it’s all pretty straightforward.

Why was it important to keep the date stamps in the digital photos—especially since they’re not chronological or a daily diary?

Dates can be important. It’s a nice way to remember when I took [the photo] without having to rack my brain or look in the archives. It also makes every photo important, because there is the date. I can take a picture of nothing, but at least we know when I took it.

Since his days printing photographs for Andy Warhol, he has amassed a huge body of work marked by its arresting and unsentimental intimacy that has been influential to the worlds of art, fashion, and photography. Bound to mimic a phone book, Ari Marcopoulos: Directory presents a collection of approximately 1,200 photographs, with curator and critic Neville Wakefield providing insightful commentary on some of Marcopoulos’s singular images. Copublished with Nieves, each book in this limited-edition series includes a print signed by the artist. A release is set for April 5th, 2011 through Rizzoli.

Photographed by Ari Marcopoulos and styled by Yohei Usami, this is the latest lookbook shot by a prominent photographer to showcase Supreme’s fall/winter lookbook for this year. Created to feature in the latest edition of warp magazine, Nuggets is shown to be modelling some of the more mature pieces from the collection in a natural and every day way. Actively demonstrating that one can easily skate whilst wearing even the most sophisticated pieces from the run, Nuggets is also seen skating in various garments. Fans can expect a full release of each piece shown to arrive at select Supreme retailers soon.
