The last time we saw Anthony Lister in Los Angeles, he painted a mural based on the film The Rise of the Planet of the Apes. The Australian art extraordinaire is back again as he prepares for his solo show at New Image Art. Looking to get out of the cramped studio setting, Lister took to the streets to create a mural with help from Branded Arts. After only three short hours, Lister was done, proving that speed and execution are two traits in his big bag of tricks.

Renowned Australian-born street artist and painter Anthony Lister, creator of hundreds of murals throughout the world, has teamed with Twentieth Century Fox to pay tribute to the film Rise of the Planet of the Apes which is set for DVD release. Available for view outside the De La Baracuda store on Melrose in Los Angeles, this highly visible mural is a dream come true for Lister. In speaking about it he said, “I have been a fan of Planet of the Apes since I was a little kid. To be able to work directly with the franchise to create a mural in my style for the release of Rise of the Planet of the Apes is pretty awesome.”

Australian-born painter Anthony Lister has connected with Colab Eyewear to illustrate the brand’s 2011 selection. Colab provides limited edition artist collaborations, which are uniquely highlighted through their rather creative promo shots. In commemoration of its 58th issue, Los Angeles art publication Arkitip are hosting a pop-up gallery in conjunction with paint purveyors The Comex Group whom will be supplying their product. Featured artists Aaron De La Cruz, Anthony Lister and Skypager were given the selected theme of Color, in which they will showcase their works amongst multiple platforms including a documented print issue as well as said gallery installations at Project Space in Los Angeles. Anthony Lister recently wrapped up a one night showing of his “Fierce” exhibition in Los Angeles, which followed a larger showcase in Art Basel Miami in late 2010. Offered below are some shots from the “Fierce” show, which featured works from Lister’s Art Basel and Sanrio Gift Shop contributions, as well as a short interview with Lister conducted by Roger Gastman.

What was your mindset when creating this body of work?

To be subtle yet strong. I had a small sketchbook that I had drawn out in Sydney of my friends sitting at bars and doing graffiti etc. I used those drawings to structure these paintings. It all started with a few lines and a good feeling.

This work doesn’t cover your usual topic of superhero’s as much as past shows – why did you go to more core images of women and graffiti?

That’s just what was around at the time.

What is something that you would like people to know about you?

My grandmother was an artist. She died yesterday. Her name was Josephine Lister and she did a great painting of Will Smith.

You recently did A LOT of work in Miami for Art Basel – tell us about your experience there.

It was kind of like the time of my life. I wasn’t there long but I had a great time. There wasn’t a moment I wasn’t party-arting unless I was painting but even then it felt like a party with every wall being like candy to the eyes of stealth artists shaking off their cool and thug to just make fucking awesome skill shit. ESPO told me to wear my “son block” so I did, it was hot.

If you were an ACDC song what song would you be and why?

What was your childhood pet?

When I was 10, I had a turtle I found at the creek, but my brothers pet rat’s babies ate it one day while I was at school. I never went to school again.

Opening Friday, January 14 from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m., THIS Los Angeles and Monster Children magazine host Fierce, a solo exhibition featuring original works by Australian graffiti and street artist Anthony Lister. Fierce debuted this past December during Art Basel at a pop-up gallery space in Miami’s Wynwood Arts District. The exhibition will make a special one-night appearance at THIS Los Angeles in Highland Park, and works on view include 11 wood panels, five large canvases and more than two dozen masks.

Stenciling started as a substitution for screenprinting, but quickly morphed into Logan’s medium of choice. A perfect union was conceived by spraypainting stencils of his subjects: the dirty and gritty nature of the spraypaint thoroughly depicted the decay of the city while the muted shine of metallic paint mirrored the faint glimmer of hope and life within it. It is this symbiotic relationship with the city that fuels his work.

With his photorealistic style, Logan draws a parallel between the cold, harsh city and a warm, vibrant organism. It is alive; a breathing creature where the ebb and flow of people washing over its sidewalks act as cells circulating through its veins. Buildings block passageways, walls block views, doors hide openings. The outside world is effectively shut out while the city creates its own reality. Confined spaces on subways, honeycomb living structures; it is a labyrinth of working systems limited only by its border, its ‘skin’. Logan uses his art to explore the microcosm in which he is a cell, just part of a whole. The nuances of city life that epitomize the urban existence are what he dwells upon.
