[Quote] for the exterior garage shots, just a 580EXII bouncing off the ceiling. the others were using a longer shutter, and me moving around the car firing the flash

486rc2 is a really good ball head with a quick release plate. for myself i find the release plate very useful when you need to take the camera off the tripod really quickly. theres nothing wrong with the ones at best buy, but you should also consider the weight that the tripod can support if you're planning to get a battery grip, lens, flash...etc. for the 430vs580, yup they only sell the markII versions now, but you can always buy used. same with the tripod actually, just search the buy and sell sections of photography-on-the-net. theres usually good deals there from really honest people. the 430 is a slave flash only, and it only has the option of vertical movement. it is also not as powerful as the 580, the 430 however is good enough if you just need it for indoor shots, or places with low light. but i chose the 580 to use it as a master and to use it outdoors for a variety of different photoshoots. as for proper exposure when using the flash, well it depends if you can properly expose your photos firstly. you can bounce the flash with a flash card, or just off the wall. that usually creates a more even light across your picture. also, consider the iso you are on, and how you are metering the photo. it all just takes practice and time, im still learning aswell and most of the time my photos are slightly under/over exposed. and it also depends on how serious you plan to get with photography, if you plan to keep upgrading, it would be best to save your money and buy the best the first time around instead of spending money twice to upgrade your flash, and or tripod. hope that helpsblushing

[Quote] get a manfrotto 190probx w/486rc2, 8gb CF card, and the nifty fifty, but dont get the 430. you definately need the tripod and CF card the most, and for the flash, just save for the 580, it can be a master, full 180degree swivel in both directions, and its more powerful. if you do end up getting the 10-20 make sure you get a 77mm CPL, its so useful in almost all situations

[Quote] shoot everything you see, and in every situation. just have your camera by your side 24/7 so you pick up those tiny things bit by bit. at least, thats how i learned.
