Yeah definitely traditional art methods and illustrator, but you should become well versed in photoshop as well. Download their demos at adobe.com.

photoshop
only if you want to add ALTERD photos and such like elements to the design.

Freehand can handel and do many things with a standard bw image like colour and crop and section etc to use in the design.
