basically I'm looking for a new laptop for college. $500 budget. will be mainly used for schoolwork and browsing. couple music/movies here and there that sort of stuff. not much of a gamer. just looking for a cheap, reliable laptop. would you recommend a Vaio? or should I keep searching? if so, what would you recommend?

Sony Vaio (Best Buy)

-Sony - 15.5" VAIO E Series Laptop
-4GB Memory
-500GB Hard Drive

The Dell models that are sold at BestBuy seem to lack quality and lifespan compared to the ones you order directly from Dell.

Only Dell I would ever consider are the XPS models, but are somewhat pricey.

That ASUS definitely has better specs compared to the Vaio. I've always had good luck with ASUS products. Reviews say it has a decent trackpad, which is a rarity among notebooks in this price range.

Should it not have been covered by warranty after one year? $800 fix? Unless it was somehow your fault, I don't see a $800 fix as a possibility for ANY laptop. You'd have to dead a fair number of components to require an $800 fix.

I have an HP now. It was absolute shit before I did a clean W7 install. It runs decent now, but it's on Ubuntu. I'd never buy an HP though, this was gifted.
