Is a Macbook really worth it?

Aug 02, 2012 @ 01:02
We'll have to agree to disagree then.
You think that Windows 7 > OSX.
I think that OSX > Windows 7. (no, not just because of its look)

I think the macbook is one of the best laptops on the market due to its quality of construction, good specs, and its ability to run OSX, while still being able to run all other operating systems. The PC cannot do the same. I don't think anyone could contest that point of view. Most experts agree that the Macbook is one of the best *STOCK* meaning, without modification, laptops you can get right now, assuming you have the cash.

That is pretty much the crux of our arguments. Since we differ in opinion and there is no right answer anyways,
I'll quietly go back to lurking. blushing
Aug 02, 2012 @ 01:12
It's all preference anyways

Also I hate the virus argument because if you can't keep an anti-virus up to date you're either lazy or stupid.

It depends what you want to do with your computer. Personally, I choose PC because a lot of the engineering programs don't run on macs and I occasionally game. Macs are great for editing videos and such. I know that architecture college in my school advises students to get a Mac simply because its better for what they are using it for. While the engineering college advises students to purchase a PC.

you can run osx smoothly on a windows pc, have been since the x86 chips appeared in Macs. Macs use the same parts. They only run 'faster' because of the os since it's unix based. the components are the same as windows based computers. Osx86 was gimmicky though, there's no advantage. Osx licenses cost money, or are illegal, and seeing as linux distros are faster and free, people dualboot that as opppsed to osx. osx is nowhere near as secure as linux distros, hence their prevalence on servers.

whoever said that he's a comp sci major and is using a mac is a fucking joke. you're probably a freshman or you haven't gone very far into computing to know that the OSX's programming architecture is vastly inferior to linux or windows in terms of practicality for a computer science major/student.

Just note Macs are better in the end.

Go on...

Correct me if I'm wrong, but when you see teens using macs over windows, it's a sign of status more than functionality features. Majority of younger consumers usually don't do research going into purchasing but buy Macs for the appealing look. I'm not a techy person but from my experience Macs perform a lot better than Windows history. All I'm saying is the younger teen demograhic will just buy it to "fit it" In some sense

Is Supreme really worth it? No. Its all how it's presented and perceived. At least that's how I view it because in comparison to windows it does have its pros but for those on a budget people are basically paying hundreds more for the visual presentation and image to society rather personal preference/actually doing research in purchasing what's best for ones use. *Cough cough.

If you're rich just get it. If not, view other choices. Just note Macs are better in the end.

I guess people don't agree with me lol but like I said with Supreme is also mainly consumed through the eye of presentation and how it's perceived. It is! Limited quantity call for a larger demand through consumers, Resale values double, even triple from product placement, odd future, etc. when reality is manufacterment probably was only $20 for each hat even less than that to produce the hat. There's a lot of hidden marketing schemes were being "brainwashed" by lol

only good thing apple provides is their handheld devices. avid computer users know macs are over-priced and useless. with the money you buy on a mac you can build a nice rig online and possible purchase a tablet/laptop. To many argue about pc crashing yada yada. Parts can be replaced for a cheap ass price. Good luck doing that with any apple product cause you are pretty much forced to buy another rig/unit.

For a college student, hell yes
Aug 04, 2012 @ 05:10
im a techy and am know a decent bit about computers and have used android/linux for as long as i can remember.

after messing around on a macbook ill be going that route. i have the money, so thats not an issue. and im currently using a top of the line u300s ultrabook, so its not like im coming from a piece of shit.

and holy fuck their trackpad software shits on windows/linux trackpad software

To be honest, everyone these days have macbooks, especially students, and you'll probably feel really outdated if you're carrying around an old bulky (non-apple) laptop.
Aug 04, 2012 @ 06:28
more than worth it if you can afford it...
sure there are many other affordable laptops that are also amazing
Aug 04, 2012 @ 07:26
it's only worth it if you feel it's worth it. if you think it cost too much then just get something other than Apple. Before I got mine i was thinking i could just get something like a sony, dell, etc and still have like $600 in my pocket but I kept going back to the mac. I don't need it for anything special, i just like the os and the track pad was a nice plus. I've never had a "good" computer so I can't really compare to anything else.
Aug 04, 2012 @ 07:34
Honestly would recommend a SonyVAIO Laptop, Macbooks are overpriced and for people who dont know much about technology. (or for computer programmers since it can run windows and OSX)
macbooks can run multiple windows at a time though, something windows 7 can do but not as good as macbook (hard to explain your gonna have to google it)
but both are good for multitasking macbook has a slight advantage.

Your gonna be writing papers for college, and Micrsoft office > any other product out there
and im pretty sure microsoft office doesnt come with MACbook your gonna have to pay separately (150$) in addition to having it. but there are other alternatives like openoffice but that program kinda sucks.

for cinematography editing programs and such can both run on OSX and PC so its up to you.

your honestly better off googling it and researching into it yourself its your major and your money. ya feel me?
Aug 04, 2012 @ 07:36
how does open office suck? i've found it does everything i need.

you should get a mac not even just mac laptops but desktops are the most secure system on the market and pc users always are saying how overpriced it is but there laptops will crash in 1-2 years so if you put more money into a mac it will last 10x longer i have a mac and never had any problems with it blushing
Aug 04, 2012 @ 18:31
ppl who ask this question are usually ppl that cant afford one and want some type of validation on why they shouldnt get one....If you have the money it is the best laptop on the market for what its capable of. Along with the fact that I have had mine for 3 years and never had a virus compared to a top of the line HP I had that crashed due to one...that speaks fot itself..spend the extra couple hundred and have to a top of the line laptop for years to come

First of all, many viruses aren't written for Mac as person above stated. You do however get malware that most people never seem to notice. Second, best laptop is in the eye of the beholder. Spending an extra amount of money for the same parts is asinine. I can buy parts for the future at lower rates than what Apple sells them. If you are buying because you like the OS that's another story. I find the Mac OSX to be wonderfully simplistic but doesn't fit my needs for certain things. Third you are complaining that your top of the line HP crashed due to a virus you got on it while doing something in a risky area on the net most likely. I wouldn't blame them. That is on you. I've had my computer for 4 years and I've had maybe 5 viruses total from not having a virus protector during that time. Not my computer's fault as you seem to pin it on.

All of these problems that people stated such as viruses and hardware problems can all be solved by one word -RESEARCH. Research the right hardware. Research the right virus protector. Research about the differences between the OSs. Mac is perfectly capable as is Windows (And Linux as well!)

Side note: Whenever you don't buy a Windows computer directly from Microsoft. Clean install windows or take hours and uninstall all of the company's bloatware. That is usually what causes a lot of crashes.

it is definitely worth it. I've had mine for 2 years now and not a problem since. I used to have a lenovo business grade thinkpad and that was alright but the problem was the amount of viruses I got. Before you get to the stupid jokes about porn n everything..they mainly came from song torrent downloads. Because macs aren't as popular as PCs, there are way less threats against them. I used to get a virus once a year from just going on random links while researching or whatever

!!!!!!!!

Lol top of the line HP computer, no commercially produced computers are top of the line for your buck. In all honesty though if you prefer the iOS then go for it. If you're only interested in the parts you can build an equal or even better specs with less money than retail for Macs.

this isn't a good point, my brother and my supervisor have both bought iMacs this past year and both of them had to be returned. Even Apple computers can crash

all this virus talk is confusing to me. i never have issues with virus's, and i torrent, look at porn, download shit all kinds of stuff. it's kind of easy to see a sketchy site or situation. i just don't understand how all these people get virus's.

and like dude said above, first thing PC users should do when they get a new computer is format and do a clean install.

@bolandfan bro honestly if you have the bills go for it....if its gonna cost you an arm and a leg then your next best bet is a Vaio which themselves are up there in price as well. I have ran thru 3 windows computers in a span of a yr nd a half...I have had the same mac im typing on for about 2 years going on 3 I believe....

Lol keep buying commercially produced computers that are loaded with useless free trials, stupid ass programs, and more. Coming from you saying that windows computers suck is a joke because you can't seem to figure out how to screenshot using keys instead of a camera. If you can't manage that then your points are invalid about viruses.

Are Macs worth it? Yes and no. Are they worth the price when it comes down to raw hardware to dollar ratio? Hell no. Not even close. Is the end user experience with OSX worth it? Depends on the person. I have a Mac because I really do enjoy OSX MUCH better than the alternatives. I've gone from Windows to Ubuntu to Arch and I can easily say that OSX is the most simple experience I've had in computing. When I was heavily into programming and such, using Linux distros and Windows was much more preferable because it allowed me to use my skills. Now that my hobbies and interests have somewhat shifted, Mac serves all my needs in a much more simple execution. The build quality is also great, and the customer service is second to none.

And as someone who knows how to remove malware manually, I'll say the lesser chance for viruses thing is nice. Not a life saver, but definitely nice.
Aug 05, 2012 @ 15:45
@kr00kd You're right there. The best virus protection is going to be Common Sense 2012. If someone don't know how to avoid viruses then they really shouldn't be speaking on the issue as a whole.

How do you go through Windows laptops like that? Gets a virus and then you throw it away? Format, reinstall Windows, restore pics/videos/programs from external HDD, get virus, repeat. A virus doesn't mean the computer is garbage, it means you have a minor inconvenience and must reformat. If you have everything backed up, it's not really that big of a deal. I had a Mac-using friend get a virus on my laptop when I still had W7, I gave him a hard time for a few minutes and then began the formatting process.
