I hate skateparks, especially indoor ones. I live no where near one. The nearest one to me is about 30 minutes away, and the other one is run by BMX kids now. And whenever I tried to skate one, I have the worse session ever. The environment doesn't feel right.
And kids in general are just good these days. Especially when they have the time to skate almost all day, every day, and they just focus on that. I wish I had that time. I know what you mean though when you skate around kids that are better than you.

I usually try go early, get in a few hour before they all
turn up, then leave when the park gets rammed.

That omnitech figure thing is a terrible idea. That's why skate, skate 2, and skate 3 exist. I lol'd at how they filmed that shit like an actual skating video. The guy looked so dumb holding that thing, and I can't believe they wasted time creating a mini skatepark.
