I want to move there, just like everybody else. I just don't understand why it costs so much to move from here to there. I wanna be able to get out there either next year or the year after, but I have no clue how I'm supposed to get the money for those expensive ass apartments. My plan was to move out there, go to a community college (my grades are horrible, long story), then get a high GPA and apply to some of the colleges out there. How will I be able to get a nice apt, that's not in the hood, for a reasonable price?

Big part is exactly like you said "everyone wants to live there". You also are trying to get an apartment in a time when the housing market is terrible so if you have good hustling skills you cant talk nearly every real estate agent down to a lower price.

On academics- unfortunately, state funded schools (Community Colleges, CalStates, and University of California Schools) are getting across-the-board budget cuts. I heard from my friend that Glendale CC can't even afford Friday classes. In terms of housing, Landlords win/Renters Lose. It's becoming increasingly hard to find something affordable, much less finding a transfer college that will offer better opportunities for higher education. It's just becoming more and more expensive for education.

I'm guessing you would have to pay for an out-of-state fee for community classes, which is like 5 times the price of in-state tuition. It's madness...

I live in California. Sacramento to be exact. Just moved, couldn't afford to live in the Bay anymore. My parents, and older siblings say it's pretty cheap here. Compared to living in the Bay Area/Socal, Sacramento is cheaper. But, it's hella boring here. That's the downside. But the Bay's only an hour and a half drive away.

So would it be better to just stay in my city, go to a CC, then transfer to a UC so I can stay on campus?

Sacramento City College.

Sac city college tuition for out of state students is not cheap, i went there for a semester, and some people that i talked to there were from out of state had to pat $200+ a unit, as opposed to my $20 a unit

Ok, so I get the idea that more than likely I will get raped with high tuition. That's why I'm asking should I rent an apartment so I can go on in-state-tuition.

And is Sacramento my best bet? I'm going to be a 18yr old out there on my own. I have this year left to get a solid plan before I go out there because once I leave to go to CA, I don't wanna end up having to come back home to my parents house because it wasn't thought all the way through.

you have to be a four year resident before being considered as instate. um, thats a tricky one, you might wanna contact some csus to see if your grades will get you in and what kinda of financial aid they would have for you.

my suggestion is go to a cc in your city, get tha gpa up then apply for a school over here, definitely gonna want to stay on campus (because of the out of state fees), so that way, even tho youre getting charged the fees you wont have to worry about rent or bills, and possibly food either. and im assuming sac will be one of the cheaper places to go. but more than likely you will need a lot of loans, and you should get these thru the school cus they will have loans you wont need to pay back until after college, so that way you wont have to worry about that.

NOOOO! If you get great grades at California CCs you can transfer to any UC, even Berkeley. You wouldn't have the same advantage at home. Also, if you live and work in California for 2 years, you can attain residency and pay in-state tuition. A friend did this at Santa Barbara CC and San Francisco State.

As for cutting costs, I would look into how you could share a room with someone or rent a room in a house. I have a room mate in my ghetto college apartment and we each pay $750 a month.

Thanks! This is great information. I know I can save up an amount to get out there, but once I get there; where will I stay? This is the major thing I need to figure out now. Like, I will need a place to stay immediately once I get out there.

-edit-

So is it 2 or 4 years?

Where do you want to transfer to? I'm just saying, 'cause the competition is getting more and more intense. The budget cuts directly influence who gets "in" and who gets rejected. Even the best qualified students are having a hard time because of California's financial rut.

Talk to your counselors at SCC. I'm sure they can help you out with your housing questions and questions on transferring. I'm defs not an expert on this, make some calls. hope this helps....

Stay in NC, get your degree for as cheap as possible then worry about moving to CA.

I'm thinking of doing this. It would be pretty cheap, actually a lot cheaper, but I don't want to waste any more of my time in this boring ass state. I want to go where things are moving. Ah, fuck! I'm so confused, so many different opinions and shit.

If you really want to move to southern cali, trying looking at areas a little further out like the Inland Empire its like an hour away from LA.

Not to try to knock your dream of coming here. But maybe you should try finishing out you AA @ a local community college and transfer from there to a California college. You'll save alot more money that way. If not try coming out here but like everyone else said out of state students pay $$$$$.
