I work on a military base and see people come through with PTSD everyday and can't help thinking, "what did they give up their sanity for"?

I think that question doesn't have a single answer. Some can answer it differently depending on the guys view on things.

I never understood why so many troops get diagnosed with PTSD. I got two theories, one is they are to quick now to slap that label on a soldier compared to soldiers in the past. The other is the dynamic of war now.Even though combat was much more intense in the past, it changed in wars like Vietnam and the current wars. Instead of knowing what your enemy looks like and where they are you now know very little and you walk amongst people that may try to kill you. When driving you worry about road side bombs and when walking in streets full of people you don't know if someone could try to take you out. That constant high level of alert and stress fucks a person mind. I haven't been in the military so I can be completely wrong, but I've been told both theories by veterans of WW2, Vietnam, Afghanistan, and Iraq.

there wasanother thread like this but regardless...lemme give youmy view on things...im 20 and in the airforce, Im a mechanic on F-16's...shit is sooo laid back its not even funny...no gung-ho military shit, its juss a regular job except for the fact I gotta wear my uniform...im stationed in vegas and get all my shit paid for...I can go to school for free during my enlistment...and they pay like 75% after my enlistment...if you wanna join the military, airforce is def the way to go...most relaxed shit...my advice is do a little bit of research on the jobs you wanna do and get an ASVAB score good enough to qualify...any questions just ask

Why the fuck is there military bases in turkey!

The US has bases pretty much everywhere in the world because they are the world police. I'm pretty sure they pay for the privilege and often offer protection. This basically happened because of the USSR. They had/have missile silos in Turkey. And shit like that.

Good post! One of the first things my battalion commander told us after my second tour was, "even if you think you're fine, go get checked out. Even if you , nevere fired one round or never had a round fired at you, go get checked out. Thiking about the increased likelyhood of being killed at any moment of everyday is not a natural thought process."

Yo if I have a misdemeanor warrant for under age liquor pocession and menecing can I still join the air force. I just found out about them, but I was also told that because they're not anything major that the Air Force would clear both offenses and allow me to join anyway. Any truth to this?

yeah. you just have to be up front with them. ask them about a waiver and express that you want better for yourself and you feel like the air force the way...they will eat it up

I'm not sure about the Air Force, but the Navy equivalent to a photographer is an MC (Mass Communications Specialist) and that job is one of the most popular jobs people want and is always full. My brother dropped out of the navy program he was in when he went to pick another job, they said they could give him ANY job . . . except MC. hahaha. If thats the job you want then def be persistent about it but go in there with an open mind and have some ideas of other jobs you would like to do as well. I'm not sure how the AF operates as far as job choosing, but if its the same as the navy then you will pick your job after you go to MEPS (military entrance processing station) and get your physical. Therefore your recruiter could be like "yeah dude you can totally be a photographer, just tell them thats what you want to do at MEPS" and you'll get to MEPS and they will hand you a list of 3 shitty jobs. It happens to people ALL the time and you'll here the stories at boot camp "I wanted to do X but they made me pick Y or all they had was Z. Just do well on the ASVAB and you will be in control and if you score in the 85+ range you should be able to pick pretty much anything. I scored a 95 out of 99 and the old dude running the test pulled me outside of the room and handed me my sealed test score and said "you did reallllly well, remember, you are in the driver's seat with this one".

A few things from someone who's leaving for basic training for the AF tomorrow morning. Make sure you get all your shit in writing. What ever anyone tells you as far as bonuses, guaranteed jobs, all that shit needs to be written down. They won't take word of mouth or what have you. The ASVAB isn't that hard. I got near 80. Some of the dudes at MEPS though got shit in the 30s which, not to knock anyone, you have to be damn near fucking retarded to score that low. The Air Force has the highest ASVAB score req. as well. You can try to get that photo job but I honestly doubt it will happen. The AFSCs like that are far and few between to show up on job drops. And even though it sounds like you want to get on with this pretty quickly, make sure you get a guaranteed job. It'll take longer but if you don't you're going in on an open contract and sure they'll give you a list of jobs that are available, but it's a better feeling to go with a job picked. I'm going in open mechanical but luckily I scored high enough that near anything in that field is open. Some of the cooler jobs, especially cause it sounds like you wanted to travel, are air crew jobs. I was originally going to try to land a spot as a load master (handles cargo/personnel on transport planes like the c-5, c-17, and c-130) but I failed my depth perception test like a lot of people so a lot of air crew jobs are off the table. I'm actually kind of glad that happened though because I'm going to try now to get a job with a decent amount of down/off time because I want to get into the ROTC/SOAR program and eventually become an officer and/or pilot. But in any case, think this stuff through. Make sure you don't get rushed by your recruiter and if you get a shitty one, don't let him force stuff upon you. Good luck either way man.

PS to Mind;(I probably won't read your response if you do) I might put down Nellis on my dream sheet so if I end up there, you're going to have to show me around. :p I think I'm also going to list Beale, Travis, Luke for my CONUS bases. And possibly Aviano, Ramstein, and RAF Lakenhearth for my OCONUS bases. If I remember I'll check this thread when I'm done with basic on 20 March. Ha.

And finally before I forget, anyone considering the Air Force should use these forums as a guide/tool. Full of enlisted guys from a range of fields and years upon years of experience as well as people like your self. Here's a link: www.afforums.com/

Dude do it my roomate is navy ROTC and he get's the nicest shit from his supply station for free such as a Peacoat and this other really nice black coat they gave him to wear over his khaki uniform. Don't join the army, the navy is steezier, safer and have higher standards as far as intelligence so you know all those dudes are smart and if they accept you your self esteem will go up.
