Don't go water based. Get Dax Wave & Groom, Iron Society, or Grandad's Old Fashioned.
water based washes out faster then gel
faster then normal pomade by a long shot
I know you meant water based washes out faster than petroleum based. But that's because water-based pomades are gels.
You'll never get the same flexibility of petroleum based pomades with water based ones. Plus Iron Society and Grandad's washes out with 1-2 washes, compared to Murray's which will stay in for a week.
only petroleum i ever tried was murrays at first just tried it once and gave up on the whole thing took to long to clean so then on i just did water based: random blue axe pomade, layrite super hold, monkey brains (discontinued had to get of ebay), this orange axe pomeade cus i didn't order and this cock grease xxx i posted earlier which was the best strongest hold i used and most shine using minimal product
I can co-sign on the monkey brains. Doesn't harden too much if you don't use a lot. Murray's is on some atomic level; wouldn't recommend it being your first petroleum based. Dax and don't look back.

I agree with Unreachable. I prefer petroleum based pomades over water based because they work better as it builds up in your hair. It just takes time to get use to. I usually use water based pomades when im degreasing to give my hair a breather.

Neat Waves is my favorite from Dax. It works well with my straight hair and easy to apply/comb. Only problem is that it melts easily so I usually use it during colder climates.

Dax Wave & Groom for thicker hair (Its similar to Murrays imo). Also if you're having trouble applying it. I usually just get a hair dryer and melt the pomade before applying.

Shiner Gold is the best pomade that I've tried.

Strong hold, washes out easily, and great smell. Google them

I use american crew pomade, but i'm not particularly crazy for it. My girl always has coupons for ULTA, so I usually pay $10-12 for a container. My barber used uppercut deluxe pomade on my hair last weekend, but he topped it with cheap gel for a stronger hold, so I couldn't get a feel for how it works alone.

Been a while since I used pomade but I still browse around for products when I'm bored:

Oil Based:
Lockhart's Goon Grease
Grandad's Pomades (Light to Heavy)
The Iron Society
Mr. Ducktail

Water Based:
The Daimon Barber No. 1
Cool Grease Ultra Hard
Shiner Gold
Philip B Lovin Pomade

Classics:
Murray's
Brylcreem
Groom and Clean
Geo F Trumper Pomade

OP, sounds like heavy products aren't your thing. Pomades can give an undercut height and control
but it'll be limited to pomps or Madmen hair. You can get height with the above products,
just comb it up and back.

Look into fibers/paste to be able to keep hair more natural-looking but controlled with height:

Kevin Murphy Night Rider
Hairbond Moulder
Aveda Grooming Clay

I wish they would bring back Monkey Brains. It was cheap and washed out real easily.

^ Doesn't leave a stain, but it'll make your pillowcase a little darker, kinda like a paperbag full of fries. It usually washes off though.
Might leave a stain if your pillowcase is white and your pomade is, for example, red.
