I don't get why widely known  businesses like McDonalds pay so much for commercials. I mean they are already established and the whole globe knows who they are and what product they offer. Nobody I know ever bought a product because a commercial persuaded them to do so.l If they want or burger or a new phone they probably know in general where they are going to get it from. Maybe I'm wrong but this a project for a class and I need thoughts an opinions.

oh my... you sound stupid. the reason why you grew up knowing about mcdonalds is solely because of commercials. if they stopped doing commercials, their sales will go down. that's a fact. yeah you know about mcdonalds but lets say you were busy one week and forgot mcdonalds existed. you see a commercial reminding you about it and there you go, they just made money off you. nobody you know bought anything because of a commercial? that's a false  and bold statement because you're stupid. or maybe you live in the super ghetto. who knows. word of mouth these days start from a commercial or ad.

Yo I used to feel exactly this type of way, but now that im wrapping up college as a marketing major I've been able to make more sense of it. Commercials aren't typically supposed to work like YO YOU SAW THIS RIGHT NOW YOU GON GO OUT AND BUY THIS RIGHT AWAY. Commercials are more oriented towards your subconscious, more often than not most of their effective influence goes unnoticed, playing into your habits and your emotions. Additionally, you have to keep in mind that these messages only pertain to certain audiences, so if you aren't looking to buy pampers diapers of course that commercial is going to seem pointless and stupid to you.

When it comes to question like why would mcdonalds spend all that $$ on commercials because everyone already knows about them, also keep in mind, its not just about initiating a buzz, its about maintaining one and keeping your brand relevant. In the 90s and early 2000s burger king was considered a serious rival to Mcdonalds, now they are in deep shit and nobody considers them on that level. The creepy king ads plus a few offensive commercials really drove consumers away. Additionally, notice how in new fast food ads, the successful companies have been the ones to advertise HEY LOOK WERE HEALTHY NOW, come to micky ds get yogurt or salad, come to subway and be thin cuz its fresh and you can throw mad cheap veggies on them. Sure everyone knows micky d's has burgers, but its crucial they advertise new salads and yogurts and shit to change their perception, see what im sayin?

If you don't want to read all that shit I wrote heres a summary. The ads are not typically made to get you to get up right away and buy exactly what you see them, its supposed to appeal to your subconscious. Also, even if everyone knows certain companies, its important they advertise that they are innovating and keeping up with modern times if they want to stay relevant.

I would think it has to do with ur subconscious. Perhaps ur brain still takes in the concepts McDonalds, for example, wants u to associate with their brand(happiness, family bonding time), even tho consciously u mite not seem to rly care for their commercials.

However I would argue with you that commercials(and ads in general) are extremely effective. Usually the top brands have the best publicity and new companies(or established ones that arent particularly relevant) are able to emerge and flourish thru the use of solid advertising.

Like Redbull and their "gives you wings" videos. Or Samsung and their anti-apple commercial(and celebrity ones) that went super viral last year. No doubt that sparked interest in many people and changed the general mentality as far as apple being the clear cut number one.

Also brands need to keep up their images and stay relevant, and also announce new products(which is what I often see from established brands such as Burger King, rather than general promotion of the brand itself).

You simplify it way too much, but it's true that the effect of regular commercials are declining heavily and people aren't affected by them the way they used to be, which is why marketing is a pretty interesting field as alot of new development is going on/is needed. I'm not gonna write an essay for you but look it up for your project breh

the fact that shit you see on tv + online physically changes your brain by building neurological connections blows my mind

yeah but in this case think of it like this

porn = visual stimulation/prefontal cortex , so you are desentisized to real life hot chicks/women in general

that's why most dudes are little bitches when talking to girls, because your brain is so hung on chicks being pornstars and not real life humans

in this case you're not actually having face to face interaction with a chick

so you build up some shit in your head which fucks up your perception of reality

Yeh the way stuff like porn affects peoples brain sure is interesting, but I thought you made that as a general statement and I was just saying im pretty sure everythime you think you build new connections

I got u tho

Most of time commercials are there to keep their brand awareness up. Even if they aren't necessarily pushing a certain product you're making the public aware of your business.

A few years back Nike made the mistake of rather than promoting certain products on TV commercials, they just promoted their brand name. Honestly, try to think of a product Nike has ran a commercial on that you haven't seen on YouTube. Nike's advertising team figured they were established enough the point where they don't need to push individual products, but rather just remind the public that they are still there. They are eating their words now as Nike is losing market share to brands like Under Armor and Adidas

Advertising runs the world. Being an ad major and working in the advertising world showed me more money is spent on ads/marketing than anything else. Like billions of $$$. You think businesses would spend that much if it didn't work? You're proof it works...and you don't even know it. I could probably show you pages on pages of how, why, and when ads work, but fuck you, I'm about to go get high instead.

Commercials are more oriented towards your subconscious,

Check out the book I mentioned up above. I wrote a research paper about the dangers of this.
Also, most advertiser's ads are immoral and violates people's mind many time.

Esp. during election season.

Btw I hvnt seen many american campaign ads(altho i doubt theyre much different) but here in Canada theyre fucking ridiculous. Its jus childish shit parties takin shots at each other like HB users, with no actual valuable and intelligent points. I wonder what dumbasses actually get influenced by them.
