im at my first job making 35k/year

should i do 401k? and if so, how much?

employer does not match, but they pay to manage it

I get that UC personal retirement fund. At rate im going by time i retire here its projected to be 1.7million in 1 lump sum or 2 million in monthly payments...

had 401k at ups and fuck that shit when they dont match not worth it.

Look, the advantage of a 401k is you don't pay taxes on the money you put into it. That helps you multiply yo cash up quick. Company matches started when they got rid of company retirements.
1. Use the 401k to give you a writeoff ( it will lower your gross income which may put you in a lower tax braket )and you will have 35% more money active in the market than if it was pretaxed.
2. The only downfall to this whole thing is you and I don't know what the tax rates will be like when you retire. So instead of paying 30% like you do now...we may be paying 40% in the future.
