Why do Atheists celebrate Christmas?

Dec 25, 2012 @ 22:35
Go celebrate your own holiday.

It is legal because I wish it.

Dec 25, 2012 @ 22:38
go eat a dick.
I want to enjoy spending time with my family. That's what Christmas should be about.

Christmas is celebrating the birth of Jesus. It always has been.

It is legal because I wish it.

It is legal because I wish it.

as an atheist i've noticed how weird this is. it's become an excuse for people to spend money and dumb people to spend money they dont have. jesus was a scam artist and they should change christmas to xmas.

john lamone is a fag. boland is a fag.

christmas was originally a pagan holiday. many cultures had winter festivals and they usually celebrated the sun. just christians connected the birth of the son of god to the sun, so they placed their holiday at the end of december. if there was a jesus, he wasnt born in the winter

be careful what you pretend to be

Every argument in this thread is dumb. Christmas is a christian holiday, invented by christians, celebrated by christians. I find it hypocritical for an atheist to celebrate it. And im not even christian.

Christmas isn't a christian holiday wtf are you talking about? Christmas is a derived holiday from Saturnalia which is a pagan holiday.

@trolos so youre telling me that christmas doesnt celebrate the birthday of Jesus Christ, the CHRISTIAN prophet? Stop trying to be a smartass with your origin stories.

why do non-irish celebrate st. patricks day?
Dec 25, 2012 @ 23:50
@brothersport it was originally for the god mithra. Every tradition derives from it. Christmas tree? Check. Misteltoe? Check. So if someone of a different belief (or non belief) wants to celebrate already borrowed traditions because they make them happy and create a sense of rogetherness then let them and stop being faggots.

@sugoi i dont think that post was directed at me because i never said they couldnt. Go ahead check all of my posts. Im just saying dont try to make it seem as if christmas isnt about jesus and theres no hypocrisy involved with you celebrating it.

hb is full of the dumbest nigs ever

christmas originally was a pagen holiday even the bible speaks about it when they said that the pagens was putting trees in their homes and decorating them

the reason why christmas was turned into a christian holiday is because the roman church did it

the last emperor of rome, mixed christians and pegan beliefs together, that is what the catholic church is today, bible mixed with roman idols/gods of old

a real christian should be celebrating and worshipping Jesus every single day

christmas is a false holiday

the same as easter, easter is a pagen holiday which worships a god name aster

We don't.

It is legal because I wish it.

Dec 26, 2012 @ 00:21
why do non-irish celebrate st. patricks day?
Because people dont go out there way to bash Irish people and then celebrate their holiday. If you guys want to be Atheists no one is stopping you but dont use semantics to justify the fact that yall are celebrating a holiday that is connected to the religion you spend all 364 other days of the year hating.
Dec 26, 2012 @ 00:27
^ THIS. I find radical atheists to be more infuriating than radical christians.

but people don't go around say "Happy Pagan Holiday"... they say "Merry Christmas"
if u wanna be technical about the origin of Christmas, then Atheist shouldn't call it Christmas in the first place
Don't label something "Christmas" then say Christmas is a false holiday...
Dec 26, 2012 @ 01:14
who cares what somebody else does? it doesnt directly affect your life in anyway. who cares if an athiest celebrates christmas with relatives (many of whom are probably christian). let christians do what they want, and athiests do what they want. there are douchebags in both sects, get over it. getting pissed about it just adds to the hatred thats everywhere

be careful what you pretend to be

Dec 26, 2012 @ 01:19
Why wouldn't we? Most of us grew up with it. At some point we realized that it was actually a celebration of the winter season rather than the birth of Christ. After all, Jesus was born closer to St Patricks Day.
