I read some more articles and it seems to me that the furor over this is more the fact that the swans were seen as sort of symbols of the community and it's values. It's not unusual for people, people of all colors, to get worked up over something that is seemingly trivial but has been assigned deeper meaning. Besides, it was a really pointless and shitty thing to do.
