I'm currently taking Spanish as a freshman in college and will be finished with the required courses after this year so next year, I wanna pick up either French or German. They both seem really interesting to me but I can't decide which would be easier/more useful.

I've taken Spanish, French and German. French is more difficult I'd say. Pronunciation can be a bitch, same with all those accents and shit. Other than that it's not so different from all the other romance languages.

Edit: Also you eventually pick up on that shit, so if you're planning on taking more than 1 semester of French it's nothing to even worry about. Just pick whichever you think you'd have more fun with.

French is more useful if you ever work with like the UN or some random European organization. It'll be an easier transition from Spanish as well

It will be easier to learn french if you're decent in Spanish. It's also way more useful. UN as mentioned before, Europe, Montreal and parts of Africa. There's no point really in learning German unless you wanna be a hipster in Berlin.

French is an awesome language. Wish I was learning that instead of Spanish but Spanish will help me more if i'm living in Los Angeles.

Obviously French sounds nicer than German and French is a more useful language to learn for travel/communication (mostly every German is fluent in English these days and happy to speak it). German, on the other hand, will open you up to all sorts of interesting historical/culturual things - the wealth of movements by German philosophers, authors, directors, musicians, politicians (lol Hitler) etc. is pretty amazing. I also think if you're interested in language itself (instead of just speaking it) the sort of brutalism of the German language is fascinating.

Both French and German are fairly difficult pronunciation-wise, but French grammar is most similar to English while German vocabulary is a lot like English.

So, basically: if it's just something you wanna sound cool speaking (nothing wrong with that), go for French. If you want a language with more intellectual advantages, go German.

Also, for what it's worth I think German sounds fantastic.

Our language/grammar (German) is definitely one of the most difficult ones worldwide. You should consider that. German is a very prestigious language. Simply by the fact that it's tough to learn for a foreigner. I've to admit that French sounds more beautiful than German.
