I'm probably going to open a student account and use direct deposit.

EDIT:
Also post a reason or two of why you recommend your choice.
Thanks soap.

Definately look into credit unions in your area. I know large banks are tempting because they have ATMs everywhere but the perks you get with a good credit union are unmatched by big banks, and a lot of the time free withdrawals from ANY ATMs is a perk if you pick the right credit union and open the right account.

When you drive around your area, what branches and ATMs do you see most often? For example, there is no Chase presence in VA. Pick what is most convenient for you.

My checking account is with Wachovia (now Wells Fargo) and I haven't had any issues thus far.

Its pretty evenly spreaded around my area between BOA, Chase, & Wells.
Near my house there's a Wells Fargo & BOA, & Also there's like a Chase
inside every Fry's grocery store nearby as well. ATM wise, I don't see Chase as often
as I see BOA & Wells Fargo but they exist haha.

As far as Credit Union goes, I haven't really seen any, but I'll look into it.

I went with Ally. They have virtually no fees and you can withdraw money from any atm nationwide fee-free. They have higher interest rates on their savings accounts than most competitors and offer interest checking too. If you're comfortable with the fact that it's an online bank and they don't have branches, then it's a good choice.

Just open 2 student checkings, they're free. I have a bank of america account and a chase account. Both let me deposit my checks at the atm, and both are in heavy abundance along the east coast.
