Two teenagers died Thursday, hours after one fell into a Farmingville cesspool half-filled with waste and the other jumped in to save his friend.

The pair were unable to stay afloat and lost consciousness before being pulled out by rescuers.

Eduardo Vanegas-Fuentes, 16, of Holtsville, and Edgar Calderon-Castro, 19, of Farmingville, were pronounced dead at Stony Brook University Medical Center, police said.


I didn't know them personally, but both of them went to my high school. They were ESL students, and their bodies are being shipped back to there native countries for their burials. Such a terrible way to die...

As he was attempting to push it off (lid weighed roughly 50 pounds), the entire lid gave out and slid almost all the way off, which cause him to fall forward and down into the cesspool. The second kid then went in afterwards, as the third kid threw a hose down for support. The kid that jumped in after him wasn't expecting to pass out due to the fumes.


A couple of my friends volunteer for the local fire department, and said that they had sunk into the waste, and it took them roughly ten minutes to find them and get them out. They both had pulses back at the hospital, but too much brain damage had been done.
