I think Kakuna is meant to be a metaphor for closeted homosexuality. Kakuna is in shell ("in the closet" about his homosexuality), and kakuna evolving into a butterfree is akin to coming to terms with his homosexuality

TO me, ditto is like a trend hopping ♥♥♥♥♥. Like, he is able to take the form of any pokemon, but it's just a facade because in reality, ditto is just a blob of jello with a face. If ditto was real, I'd hope that he would come to grips with himself, and the fact that wanting to be different pokemon is just admitting that the real 'him' isn't good enough.

Now who says that pokemon doesn't teach life lessons?
