when friends and i tried to start our company we tried to do everything ourselves... 5000 for a silk screen machine, heater, and burning bed or you can go with the printer which i think the cheapest i saw was like 15000... you need money for the transparencies to print each color of the design you're going to be doing... good quality paint... fine silk screens... power hose... licensing your brand... sellers license... clothing... webspace ... business cards and other advertising stuff...

biggest thing is once you start printing shirts i say a good 10 or 12 designs and just network everywhere to get your name out, researching what other clothing companies are doing or even go to those conventions where a lot of clothing companies go to display their new lines.
set goals of what kind of people you want to target, goals for the company, if working with other people their responsibilities/positions they will be in charge of, and etc. Also hold frequent meetings discuss ideas and where ya'll are at... it's also good to go out to the general public with some designs and see what they think (survey)

Just make sure if you're working with friends they are reliable... one of my partner found a job sold the silk screen machine and everything else and kept the money and bounced

I started a thread like this on the General Fashion Forums.

Basically you need some capitol to start. (2-5k is good)

Get 1-3 designs you want to push out.

Find a printer if you aren't doing DIY.

You need to want to trademark a brand name.

Get a business license.

Get a webstore up. IE) Big Cartel, Wordpress, or any other fancy shit.

Think that's about it. really.

Good luck.

Geez, everyone is quick in here to knock dude for trying....How is he 4 years too late? Unless no one ever plans on buying clothes ever again, I'm pretty sure there will always be a market for it. That's why this website exists, everyone is always on the lookout for the next thing...

i would recommend you save your money for at least half a year while you fuck around with designs. get some cheap prints done locally. you might even make some connections

you'll have
1) more money
2) a better plan and some more ideas

then you can decide if you really want to pursue starting a line from scratch.

Hey, I've had this same thought before, but it would be way in the future if I ever had my own line. I can think of like 2 websites that could help:

theartofapparel.com/
www.howtostartaclothingcompany.com/

Some of the stuff on those sites seems elementary, but there is useful info if you dig deep enough (just like life). GOOD LUCK BRO!!!

just do what supreme does. that is copying everything they've ever made.

hire some artist to create some deseign, getting your name out through artist, that's mutual benefit.
make alot of friends on facebook or whatever.

oh rhinestone is a must..especially, when you make a box logo shirt, you gotta have rhinestone in each of the corner.

that's just shirts.. you'll need to make hats, shoes..etc.

as for shoes..

oh get designs on this one:

again, don't forget rhinestones on the shoe..SUPER HYPE

I"LLLLLL CAWP 20 PAIRS AND RESELL THEM.

edit: get a rapper like snoop dogg, 50 cent, lil wayne, wiz, or even kanye to wear that shoe for your box logo shirt

GAME OVER!!!

oh don't forget rhinestone on that rapper shirt.

REAL TALK

I wanted to start my own clothing line as well, so I made an appointment with one of Burberry's clothing and pattern makers. They do ALL kinds of clothing, not just one brand or style. The lady immensely recommended this book to ANY one wanting to take the proper steps of making an established company. Its like the clothing entrepreneur bible. It may look out dated, or you may think the book doesn't look like it will help your style of clothing, but its not about that. The book is straight up fundamentals of the clothing business.
