I find it works better to watch the movie and then read the novel. If you read first, the movie in comparison seems to lack a lot of the novel's story, character development and general details, plus seeing a character portrayed totally differently to how you imagined them can fuck with you (I had to stop watching Kubrick's Lolita about 20 minutes in for the last reason).

On the other hand, if you read the book second, the story seems far superior to the movie, which means not only is the book really entertaining, but it adds further insight to the movie aswell.

Watch it first, then there's no negative comparisons. Also, reading takes considerably more effort. I'd rather read something that couldn't be translated to film, or hasn't been done yet successfully.

But if it's a comic book, read it first.
