Is anyone else here interested in j school?
Has anyone started their portfolios?
Any examples of what to put in a portfolio?
Career paths?

I REALLY want to get into j school, but my school doesn't have a newspaper or any place where I can get some experience.

I'm going to transfer to either Georgetown or UGA next year for journalism. Applying for internships and whatnot over the summer so I can get some experience. The only successful journalist I know who goes here is Brian...I PM'd that cunt just for advice and whatnot but he hit me with the no reply. sad

Hell, yeah. I'm an aspiring journalist! I have absolutely no experience, though. I want to go to Ryerson (that's like the shit in Canada), but if I want to have any chance, I have to start building my portfolio.

I have a few unpublished pieces, but I want to start a newspaper at my school, as well as inquire into some teen magazine type shit I always see around my school.

I can only give advice if your J school also emphasizes on Mass Communications (Advertising, Marketing, PR), as that is what my school did. Best thing to do is concentrate on the major you want SOLELY, take hands-on classes, and get cracking on them internships. Also, get to know people in the industry you want to work. Study up on the top spots in your area (or the area you would like to be), introduce yourself, show you are personable and eager to learn, as you must first learn to market yourself before you can help anyone else out.

Word, i'm working on getting this magazine internship right now. My aunt knows a guy who knows a guy supposedly, so i'll see how it plays out. I plan on minoring in mass comm or photography, but thats another story---what I really want to know about is this portfolio talk. How do I start one and what do I do? I never made one before and didn't even think you needed it...

(BTW if anyone reads this, i'm a ill writer and will write for any reputable person for free...just want to be recognized)

I'd suggest takin a few philosophy and logic classes in your undergrad years if you want to do Journalism as a career... It will help tremendously especially in spotting falacies in your arguements and building sound ones.

This.

im in journalism school right now. Im a Ad/PR major but had to take journalism classes too (duh). but like karl said, best thing to do is focus on your path and take hands on classes. also talk to your teachers about internships and hookups.

edit: I wasnt even aware u needed a folio ta get in to j school....then again it might depend on your degree plan.

Does anyone have any insight on what kind of materials should be included in your portfolio? My average is solid enough.

I've always been interested in journalism, but I hear its a dying profession due to the internet alot of companies will rely on the net rather than print in the future what is anyones take on this ? Is this a risky profession to get involved with ?

why do you need a portfolio? You mean journalism school for college?

internship
go to college - journalism program - join paper - write stuff - save for portfolio.
