Isn't it sort of bad to get caught up in consumer culture? I'm a capitalist, as I'm sure most HBs are, but I like to focus my time and energy more on music or reading or getting into adventures, rather than cool clothes and whatnot.

@ everyone: What is your personal opinion of consumer culture?

^ it's good. it's something to work towards. it's effective in distracting you from inner peace and the wellbeing of your community.

I mean, if I'm too busy going to college (which the government pays me to do) or working (which I don't do, yet) towards a new pair of jeans, I have to think about real stuff, like relationships and what I'm doing with my life. consumer culture allows me to live on autopilot until I can manage that kinda thing.

I agree. It's about the only thing that keeps me sane and keeps me focus during my studies. Auto-motivationcool

^ Not sport. Art, I suppose, if comic books count. But I have to pay for books, don't I? I suppose it's different, though. Because you can't read a belt.

i try not to. Things that make me happy are only last for temporarily.

In all seriousness though, how in the hell can u not if you're living in States? The media of this country bombards people with commercials and we're living in a country with a capitalism.

we'll spend until we die. Buy things we dont need. That's the American way.

You don't have to buy things. You could use that money to do things that bring you joy. But if something brings you joy then why not buy it. Nothing wrong with that.
