So, my final project for my philosophy class is a debate. Basically, the topic is "should cigarettes be banned?" I'm against banning cigarettes. I need a bunch of arguments as to why cigarettes should not be banned. I got a few (freedom of choice, helps economy + creates jobs) that type of thing. Anyone got any other ideas on why cigarettes should not be banned?

I'd say our amendments are your strongest argument... but don't make it seem like cigarettes save lives.

It's a major industry that pulls alot of money for the government considering they tax cigarettes.

Here's an argument:

If smoking is banned just think about the problems it will cause. It's just going to force the thousands of people that smoke them to smuggle them and smoke them illegally. It will cause a whole movement that the government won't be able to deal with. Especially in these times.

I was thinking that too, it'd be the same thing as when prohabition occured, except it'd probably be worse because cigarettes are addicting, so there'd probably be a more violent uprising because people need their shit.

Cuz it's your right to put anything you want in your body. Plus banning ciggs doesn't make them go away. A ban on tobacco would just make ciggs like any other illegal drug; they'd be sold illegally, fund criminal groups, you'd get them from a dealer that might be pushing harder drugs, ppl would be smoking ciggs of questionable quality, etc. Pretty much treat it like you'd argue for any drug. Also, mention that a ban on smoking would push some ppl to chew which isn't exactly healthy either.

You're Canadian so keep in mind that our medical system is socialized so all smoking related illness is a direct burden on the taxpayer, a massive burden. A good debate is to whether non-smokers and generally healthy people should receive tax breaks. Why should I pay the same tax as the guy smoking 2 packs a day? Smokers are responsible for billions of dollars of medical care a year, does the tax of tobacco make up for that? What's the balance? What's more important? General health and well-being of citizens or tax revenue? Do they go hand in hand? Is there a correlation between the two?

Already mentioned is the most obvious and pressing one. Prohibiting something, especially something that has become embedded in a culture and society will only drive it underground and create yet another source of revenue for organized crime.

Some things to think about.

You have either a. a really bad philosopher teacher or b. a really dumbed down cirriculum. What kind of stupid question for a debate, especially in philosophy, 'should smoking be banned'?

think about the prohibition with something that is actually physically addicting. It would cause mass hysteria.

Smoking
I'm a Canadian who does not like smoking particularly. It is a burden on our health care, as drinking is, as drunk driving related accidents are too, not to mention a burden on other tax related systems like policing. But once you start picking out how this is a problem and that is a problem then eventually you'll end up in a country with so many restrictions. I know the numbers may be skewed one way or another but drinking causes health issues, so does all of the shitty food that is around us. Prohibition? Making McDonald's illegal? I am not a fan of smoking, but my love for getting drunk, partying and eating delicious fast food is too strong to start making everything harmful illegal.

I drink so I'm not one to talk.
