so during the 1952 olympics in helsinki, he wins 2 gold medeals in the 5k and 10k race mind u in the 5k race he was in 4th place coming in to the last lap and ran a disgusting final lap to win the gold... days before the marathon begins, he saw that there were no czechs running in the marathon so he decides that he should go represent his country, he runs it with no prior training for the marathon or anything, jim peters whom was the world record holder at time, wanted to win real bad and pretty much blow everyone out the water, he ran a crazy ass first 15 kms hoping that he would have such a rediculous lead, that he would then be able to pace himself for the next few kms and kill it in the last couple, zaptopek catches up with him at the 15th km and asks whether this was a good pace, peters trying fuck with him says this pace is way too slow, what did zaptopek do? he sped off, broke the world record and won the gold... SWAG
