I mean the Ramones changed a lot of shit, I definitely think they went way too pop way too fast but those dudes pretty much set the template for East Coast punk, at least in terms of aesthetics

Hip Hop has always exhibited punk characteristics. The nature of punk is all built around not having the ease of accessibility to create music but do it away. When bands were being scouted by major labels in the mid 60's, punkers would say "Fuck it, I can barely play but my friends and I can make some songs and play at a house for people." Hip Hop had similar roots. No access to instruments and proper sound equipment led to the using of old records on their player to create new songs. That DIY element all along with being provocative and progressive in lyrics is the essential punk element.
Completely agree.
The biggest problem with this article, is that the writer clearly doesn't have a good understanding of the connections with Punk and Hip-hop from their very roots. The two genres follow almost parallel timelines. Punk just happend to be from white kids who grew up on rock and folk music, and hip-hop from innercity black kids who grew up with funk and soul. But the rise of the two have always been the fuck the system attitudes that both share that appeals to their audiences.
