I also recommend just going through the Recommended Artists on last.fm.

That's how I found most of my list up there. Miles Davis --> John Coltrane --> etc.

Skull Snaps are definitely a group worth listening to. They only released one album but it's incredibly good.
Besides that, pretty much the majority of stuff in 'tellmewhentogo' list is worth a go.
