Doing shows, selling mixtapes (literally tapes) out of their trunks, industry connections, or just hounding the fuck out of A&Rs or industry guys. You really had to know someone back in the day and you still do now but it's easier to get to know someone.

Pretty much what Beach2theBay said. I grew up in the 80s and the 90s and I remember seeing people putting together demo tapes and trying to even make trips to NYC (that's what rappers did; people that wanted to be rock stars, well, they packed up and went to LA) just to pitch their demo to some record label connect. But yeah, shows, selling tapes out of your car or a local record shop and being in the right-place-at-the-right time and knowing the right people.

A lot hasn't really changed ... it's just that the internet has added the quick-method. But, a lot of the other stuff you still have to do or it would help if you do it.

I wish it was still "the old days." Because of technology, anyone can become a "rapper", "singer", "producer", "label ceo" and so on in minutes. Back then you had to seriously be about yo shit to earn those titles. Baby and Master P are the best examples of this. They made it off of pure ass hustling. By hustling I mean drug money but hustling in general. No business school, no social media. Those niggas were just about their shit and that's how they got on. The only difference between Master P and Baby is the product.

even thought the "game" is over-saturated with artists as a result of the internet, you still get so much dope shit, you can't even be mad
