Anyone notice that nowadays, rappers don't really survive on their own? They gotta have a movement. A couple examples are like with Maybach Music where Rick Ross teamed up with Pill, Meek Mill, Wale, etc. and now they are a full blown hip hop powerhouse. G.O.O.D. Music is Kanye's where people like Big Sean and Pusha T reside. Young Money has mad huge artists including Wayne, Nicki Minaj, Drake, Tyga, etc, and they are all frequent collaborators as well. Then you get to the less established groups like Odd Future. They are a great example of what hip hop is gunna start looking like in the future. Not only is one artist going to get big, but an entire group with artists who all have styles that work with each other so when someone likes Tyler, they are likely to start listening to Earl or Mellowhype. Another example that is really just starting out is the ASAP group. ASAP Rocky definitely is the only one getting recognition at this point, but since his deal is worth $3 million, and he says that he is starting a label, there is huge mainstream potential for their entire collective.
I don't really see many rappers being able to survive in the future if they don't have anything to offer beyond the one or two mixtapes they put out every once in a while, but if they have material beyond their work, like the albums of the other people who could have appear on their tapes, it starts a connection towards a group of music that listeners will really end up feeling. The fact that there are frequent collaborations in these groups is also huge because if you loved one artist, or maybe you loved their production style, you're likely to hear the same style or a verse by them on one of the other albums in their collective.
Anyone else feel the same?

Wiz got where he is alone. He didn't even do collabs with big names until he was already mainstream. Rick Ross asked him to join MMG but he said no. At the time I thought that was a good move but after hearing Rolling Papers I wish he had.

People need to be inside something. Fans love to say 'Jet life, fool', 'Taylor gang or suck a nigga dick' and things like that. make them feel a little bit closer to their idols.
But shit is getting really frequent and it sucks.

this aint nothing new, a few of the most popular examples have already been mentioned. the formula goes like this...

someone with skill gets some shine, they proceed to "put they niggas on" and the other artist build popularity off the limelight, rinse and repeat.
its just alot more noticeable now since EVERY fuckin guy in the crew got a tumblr, twitter and a youtube account so its like your bound to end up stumbling upon their shit (literal shit since most of the crew is gonna suck lol) sooner or later. i actually think that it ends up hurting some of the individuals in the crew with actual talent in the long run i.e. the fugees would have been much better w/o praz imo.

on another note, whatever happened to the rapper duets? the mobb deeps, EPMDs, nas&AZ and young gunnas (lol)? even the clipse broke up sad
bring them back plz

Duo is so gay. In Hip Hop and Rock I mean. In Eletronic it's kind of a tradition.

lmfao such an ignorant comment. Q is on Kendrick's level, if not better. and Ab-Soul is super slept on, i feel like he's gonna shine on a group album for them.

Kanye, and most of the other GOOD members would probably survive on there own, same with drake, rick ross, lil wayne and nicki minaj. Everyone else in there lil cliques would be unknown.
